Step 2: Adding the Wash

Now that you have finished inking your landscape it is time to add the wash. To start, dip you thin brush in the cup of water. Shake off any excess water that might drip on your art. Place your brush just below one of the ink lines until the ink starts to bleed towards the brush (See illustration 1). Now, pull the ink down from the line until it starts to fade out (See illustration 2). Notice how the black ink changes to a lighter value as you add water.

Use this technique throughout the painting to give your work a misty, spacious look.

*Note- You don’t have to do the wash technique on every line.
