GUIDANCE SERVICES

Truman prides itself on being extremely guidance oriented.  Each student is assigned a guidance counselor upon admission to Truman.  This counselor monitors the student’s progress and programs the student for the entire four years that he or she attends Truman.  In addition, the guidance counselors are prepared and trained to handle any extraneous matters that may affect the student’s education, such as family situations, abuse, neglect, social adjustment, health issues.  The guidance counselors provide academic intervention services for the students in their caseloads.

·        The College Office (Room 666) provides college and financial aid counseling and coordinates SAT and PSAT examinations.  Most of our students get substantial financial aid packages and fee waivers for aptitude tests.

·        Social workers and related service counselors are available to counsel students and their families who are experiencing serious difficulties.  Referrals are made to outside agencies when the situation warrants it.

·        A SPARK prevention specialist visits classes to make presentations about drug abuse, violence prevention, and AIDS.  The intervention specialist runs groups during lunch hours and students’ free periods to discuss some of these same issues.

·        The Conflict Resolution Team is very active at Truman.  The Mediation Specialist is available to all students.  Truman students have been trained to be peer mediators and mediate conflict between students.
