SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

The Special Education Department is located in Room 766.  It provides self-contained classes for learning disabled and emotionally handicapped students and Resource Room services to general education students identified as learning disabled.  Resource Room services are also provided to general education at-risk students who are not identified as learning disabled.  Counseling, hearing services, speech and language therapy, physical therapy and adaptive physical education are provided to general and special education students, as needed.

Whenever possible, special education students are placed in general education classes.  Students are almost always mainstreamed in elective courses.  Each special education student’s Individual Education Plan is reviewed yearly on an Annual Review Conference.

The IEP team or the School-Based Support Team consists of a school psychologist, the social worker, Related Service Provider, and a Special Education teacher.  This team investigates initial referrals to special education and completes re-evaluations for students currently enrolled in special education.

Most of the special education students at Truman are enrolled in a diploma-bound course of study.
