Grade 6
CORE is an interdisciplinary approach for teaching Language Arts and Social Studies. The curriculum is centered upon world geography with an emphasis on cultures, economics, environments, and human interactions. Woven into this curriculum is the exploration of literature from different areas of the world. Students will creatively use their communication skills in writing, reading and oral presentations., Spelling, grammar and vocabulary skills will also be accentuated as students strive to achieve the standards. Mathematics classes stress fundamentals and problem-solving skills. Instruction will includes fractions, decimals, percentages and other basic concepts. Critical thinking skills are developed while relating mathematics to real life activities.

Science curriculum centers on Life Science from an environmental perspective. The environmental focus allows an introduction to Physical Science preparing student for both the Life and Physical Sciences in the upper grades. Students will study process skills, the scientific method and develop
critical thinking skills.

Second Language instruction is in Spanish. The emphasis is on exposure to Spanish through a conversational approach. Topics include days of the week, months of the year, weather, numbers, families, recreation and greetings.

Elective Subjects for all students include physical education, art, general music, graphic arts, dance and computer (keyboarding and the
use of specific software).

Grade 7

Language Arts curricula includes a variety of short stories, novels and poetry. In addition, throughout the year, traditional writing prepares the students for the array of written communication vehicles while creative writing sparks their imaginations. Spelling, grammar and vocabulary skills continue to be emphasized. All communication skills, including oral, aural and
speaking are stressed.

Mathematics instruction centers on problem solving and critical thinking. Specific topics include fractions, decimals, percents, geometry, probability, and algebra. Word problems are included in all topics.

Social Studies places the emphasis on the development of our country to 1870. The major areas of study will include Americas beginnings, Colonization, the Revolution, the creation of the United States Government, the Era of Expansion and the Civil War. Geographical skills are taught throughout the year.

Science emphasizes physical science, Topics covered are properties of matter scientific method, the atom, metals and nonmetals, chemical equations, heat, classification and chemical reactions.

Second Language places the emphasis on oral communication. Students in the seventh grade study Spanish with an emphasis on oral and written communication skills. Basic instruction includes the development of vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar and usage, dialogue and cultural awareness of Spanish-speaking countries. Students are encouraged throughout the year to speak in Spanish in the classroom.

Electives include physical education, chorus, art, instrumental music, computer and dance. Students begin to select honor classes in order to specialize in areas such as the Fine and Performing Arts for the remainder of their years at Marie Curie Middle School

Grade 8

Language Arts A variety of works of literature are used continue to develop communication skills that include reading, writing, listening and speaking. Frequent writing exercises are used to hone writing skills. In that context, spelling, grammar and vocabulary skills are stressed.

Mathematics study continues the development of problem solving skills. Students are enrolled in either Math A or General Math classes. Social Studies emphasizes American History from 1865 to Modern Times. Topics include the New Nation, Rise of Industry, Imperialism, the Progressive Era, World Wars I and II, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Era, Vietnam and Political Structures. Geographical skills are taught throughout the year.

Science classes are either Earth Science with a Regents examination at the end of the year or Earth Science for half a year then biology to prepare for the ninth grade curriculum. Second Language study in the Spanish language includes the advanced development of grammar, vocabulary, cultural appreciation, dialogues with an overall emphasis on oral and written communication. At the end of the year, students must pass a New York State Spanish Proficiency Examination in order to be placed in a level II class
in the ninth grade.

Electives are major subjects for students who specialized in the Fine and Performing Arts. There are several public performances of student achievement throughout the year. Students not in the arts study computers
and general art.
