Crime Scene Report:

At approximately 7:15 a.m., Friday morning, Mrs. King, the seventh grade science teacher, thought something was fishy as she walked down the hall and noticed that her door was open. She walked into her classroom and immediately discovered that the small aquarium had been broken and her prized gold fish were gasping in the sink. Beside the broken aquarium were the shattered remains of the pink piggy bank that had been on the shelf above the aquarium. A can of blue paint was spilled on the floor. Footprints of a barefooted burglar led to an open window. Bits of a white powdery substance were found next to the broken, empty, piggy bank. The only other item found was a half-eaten large chunk of chocolate candy.

When the police arrived they immediately began to gather forensic evidence.

* Sticky fingerprints were lifted from the aquarium and piggy bank.

* The painted footprints were measured.

* The chunk of chocolate candy was collected for examination. It appeared there were teeth imprints.

* The white powdery substance by the piggy bank was carefully placed in a plastic bag and taken to the forensic chemist for identification.

How We Solved The Crime

It was a late Wednesday night. I was getting off of my day shift when I got the call. It was from a duo of private investigators, (Detectives Jonathan Martinez and Joel Valerio). I knew these two; They were good. Mrs. King, a science teacher from the seventh grade was a damsel in distress. She had been robbed of every penny she had when someone broke into her piggy bank. Her goldfish were suffocated at the same time when the suspect(s) also broke the goldfish bowl.

We entered the crime scene and found four really good clues: fingerprints, chocolate candy with protruding tooth impressions, a few bare blue footprints, and white powder which turned out to be baking soda. A few things nearly got us off the track because not everything at a crime scene is a clue. We made our notes and then began to interview suspects. We had four good suspects: Lou-Lou, Dan the Man, Peg the Leg and Jake the Jock. Lou-Lou rarely wears shoes and she had a big sweet tooth; we thought that we had our thief... except that her feet were not close to the size we found.

Next, we interviewed Peggy. She is known for hanging lucky charms inside the library. She even had a white powder with her. Her employer called her superstitious because she also bangs her teeth with soda bottles. There just was one catch before we could close in on her as the thief, the mail came. It was the powder analysis sheet, saying that the powder we found was baking soda. When we questioned Lou-Lou, she said that she throws salt over her shoulder for good luck. Her powder was salt! We let her go. There were only two suspects left, Jake and Danny.

We interviewed Jake. He could have been our suspect, but because he had a tooth knocked out he stopped eating chocolate chunks. His wife also claimed that it was cornstarch that Jake rubbed on his hands to keep them dry for the baseball games. So, we let him go and wished him luck.

So far three suspects were eliminated and there was only one suspect left: Dan the Man. He entered the precinct office with a tight, old army general's uniform. He was found to be gnawing wood for survival training. These things raised our suspicions right away. Our focus was all on him. Then, his wife complained about him taking chocolate chunks. We were closing in. The powder analysis was for baking soda. He had baking soda stuffed in his pockets to keep moths away. We knew then that we had found our man. We asked him why he needed the money. He confessed and said that he needed a new bugle to play taps. We then led him off to jail. It had been a long night.
