PRINCIPAL'S STATEMENT

Dear Students and Parents of the P.S. 114Q School Community:
Thank you for welcoming me as your new Interim Acting Principal. In the ensuing days and weeks, I will be getting to know many of YOU, as you will be getting to know ME. Our mission is simple to describe and challenging to complete. Through it, we will grow, both individually and collectively. In the short term; We, Ms. Reingold and myself, will be getting to know the many new faces of both children and adults alike. More importantly, we will be examining the LEARNING that is taking place in the classrooms. After and concurrent with observing the "nuts and bolts" of the existing operations, we will meet with the many organizations and committees that serve as the School's "driving engines": The Staff, the School Leadership Team, Parent - Teacher Association Executive Board, Literacy Team, Technology Team, etc...
Once we have carved out short and long term goals based upon the discussions and data that we analyze, we will chart a plan of action to pursue them. Within these endeavors, we may face obstacles and temporary "speed bumps". We will overcome and circumvent these difficulties by maintaining the importance of our common and clear goal: Student Learning and Student Achievement.
The possibilities for our School are limitlesss: We have the pedagogical talent, the parental support, the logistical ability, and the School "Culture" to dramatically move P.S. 114Q to its proper place among the best schools in the City. We will have no excuses; Nor shall we accept any: We must begin this toil together with the understanding AND committment that all of us will be "pulling at the same end of the rope".
The Belle Harbor School should serve as a model to which OTHER schools may aspire. We will tap into all of our resources and put together the most comprehensive school in the City: We will train our students to embrace life long learning and collaboration by being active role models !
As Regional Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Cashin has stated, "This is a new beginning."
On a personal level, I deeply appreciate this opportunity to be a part of P.S. 114Q's "rebirth" in a community in which I am both familiar and comfortable: I look forward to the future with ALL of you !
Brian O'Connell, Principal (I.A.)
