PROJECT READ (LITERACY ENRICHMENT) 

  

The Before School and Afterschool Literacy Program at the Belle Harbor School--P.S. 114Q is available to provide additional time to work on literacy related themes that reinforce daily instruction in reading and writing for a targeted group of students in grades 3 - 6. Students will have the opportunity to practice the literary skills learned throughout the school day AND to plan, develop, and create projects that arise from students' strengths and expressed interests.

Literacy instruction includes interactive read aloud, author studies, independent and paired reading, reading conferences, guided reading, dramatization, discussion and reflection. Students are taught individually and within small groups; teachers model reading and writing strategies.

Program Staff communicate regularly with classroom teachers on students' needs and progress; In addition, there are regularly scheduled Staff Development sessions for Program Staff to plan thematic units with participating arts and cultural organizations.

Program Goals:

--To provide more time for literacy development (STANDARD E1);
--To develop students as readers, writers, and communicators
(STANDARD E2, E3);
--To enhance literacy through interdisciplinary projects (STANDARD E5);
--To increase collaboration with cultural organizations. (STANDARD E3).
