Task: The students will write a descriptive essay describing their wishes for the new year.

My Wishes for the Year 2002

by Laura Grade 6

My wishes for the year 2002 are very important to me. I would love to spend more time with my family, have a new personality, and a peaceful world. These wishes truly mean a lot to me.

My family is my most important wish. I would love to spend more time together. I also want to invite my two cousins over to eat dinner with my family. Spending time in a certain place together would be great, too. I would also hope that my family would take a trip somewhere.

In this year, 2002, I would like to have changes. I want to be a whole new me. I would love a new hairstyle. Every year, there is a change in everyone, because when a new year comes, there is a new beginning for everyone. So, I will begin with me.

On September 11, 2001, our country faced a terrible event that has changed everybody's lives. I want this next year to be peaceful. I want a whole new year with new beginnings. No more attacks, and NO more chaos! I would like to be able to go anywhere I want, safely. I want to live in a place that is safe once more.

Everything has changed; it has been chaotic this year. I truly hope that nothing like this will ever happen again. The most important thing of all is that my family is safe.

Music

by Mary--- Grade 5

Music means a lot to me,

Because it makes me happy.

Music brings people

together,

Music can make you happy

forever.

Music is a cheerful word.

Everyone can sing like a bird.

Gentle music is pleasant

to the ear.

Hard music, like "Rock,"

can cause fear!

Music can let you relax,

With or without a jukebox.

Just hum a tune or two each day,

And all your stress will pass away!

Task: The students will write an advertisement to convince people that New York City is a great place to live.

NEW YORK CITY -- THE BEST CITY!

New York City is the greatest city in the world. I can SMELL many things, such as hot dogs, pretzels, donuts, burgers, and smoke from factories. I SEE vehicles of all kinds. I HEAR sirens, trains, busses, and car horns. I can TOUCH houses, apartments, Madison Square Garden, The Statue of Liberty, and other famous buildings. I can TASTE foods from all over the world, in the countless restaurants of the city. New York is truly a feast for ALL your senses!

New York City has so many people I can meet, such as authors, business people, illustrators, and many other famous people. New York City is a great place live. Why don't YOU live here?

Task: The students will write a paragraph telling how they will improve themselves in 2002.

I WILL PROMISE TO...

I have two ways that I will improve for the new year. First, I will get better grades by studying every night. I will try to get better marks in math and spelling. Second, I want to be a better son to my Mom. I will listen to everything she says. These are some of the things I will try to improve this year.

Task: Students will write an essay, explaining "gifts from their hearts," and why they chose them.

Gifts From Kamila's Heart

Today, I want to give my family gifts from my heart. I don't want to buy anything from the stores, but I want to do things that can make them happy.

I want to give my Dad more love than I usually do. I will talk with him about everything, because I'm not talking with him as much as I should. I want to show him great grades from my tests or my report card. Also, I will do everything that I can help to him at home.

I would like to show my Mom more respect, and that I really love her very much. When there is dirt in our house, I will help her clean up, so she won't be so tired. When we have guests, my Mom has to cook many things, so I want to help her with the cooking. The last thing that I want to do, is show her that I can do better in school.

I want to show my brother that I really care about him. Then I'll help him with his homework, because sometimes he doesn't know what to do. I'll also play with him so he can have more fun.

I really want to write letters to my Grandparents in Poland, where I came from. I'll send them nice pictures of myself and my family. I also want to make greeting cards for them with scissors, paper, glue, and crayons. The most important thing I want to do is call them, so I can talk to them and hear their voices.

These are all the things from my heart, that I want to give my family, here, and in Poland, because I love them so much.

SPEECH

As I stand here in front of you on this day, January 22, 2002, I might appear to be a seventy-three year old weak man; but I assure you, that I stand here before you, as a strong and happy man, for I am seeing my dreams come true. There are great colors of faces before me, and such promises for our future! We have come a long way in our fight for equality, but the fight is not over. I am asking each and every one of you to teach each other friendship, not prejudice. We need to stop racial profiling, the underpaying of minorities for the same jobs, and the underpaying of our teachers. For we would be without our children's strong minds, if it were not for the good teachers. So, I leave you today with my dreams in your hands. The road might look long, but it is closer than you think. I hope freedom rings for all of you!

Task: Students will write a paragraph describing why school is a great place to be.

School Days

by Alba -- Grade 2

School teaches me important things I need to know. I like school because I learn science, math, phonics, and reading. We have free time and gym. My favorite part is when we go to lunch. I liked first grade because the teacher gave me easy work and easy homework. Now, the work is harder, but I love learning all the new things my teacher is teaching us. My favorite work to do is art.

Fire Safety

If your clothes go on fire, stop, drop, and roll. Touch the door. If it is not hot, get out of the house. If there is smoke in the room, crawl on the floor so you won't breathe the smoke in. Don't hide from the firemen. Go to your neighbors to call 911. Do not bring stuff with you because it will take longer to get out.
