Public School 96 has a population of 345 students and is located on Rockaway Blvd., on a commerical strip in South Ozone Park, Queens. We are a Pre-K through 6 School Wide Programs Title 1 school that serves an ethnically diverse population.

The students are heterogeneously grouped within each grade and supported by a pedagogical staff of 24 teachers. Of these 24 teachers, 91.7% are certified and licensed, 54.2% have more than five years teaching experience, more than 66.7% hold a Masters Degree and 58.3% are teaching less than two years. There are two administrators, one guidance counselor, one resource room teacher, three paraprofessionals, one family assistant and six school aides. We have no self contained special education classes. From Pre-K through grade four, we have two classes on a grade level. There is one fifth grade, one sixth grade and a five/six bridge class. The average class size in grades kindergarten through fourth is approximately 25 students. There is an average of 32 students per class in grades five and six.

P.S 96 is a cycle 1 recipient of the CSRD Grant. As such, we are implementing Modern Red School House as a model of excellence within our over all program of school wide reform. Through this model, we have extensive professional development that is inclusive of our entire school community. Every staff person is involved as a member of a task force. We have chosen to focus our attention on community involvement, learning and intruction. As a result of this initiative, learning centers are in every room. We have a leveled reading program in grades 1 - 3 and 5 - 6. We are beginning to write interdisciplinary thematic units that use the N.Y.S. Content Standards and the N.Y.C. Performance Standards as their foundation. As a result of our initiatives, we are a true learning community with high student achievement as our focus.
