Special Programs
Academic Intervention Services are provided to meet the needs of all students who require additional assistance to meet the State Standards in ELA, mathematics, science and social studies. Intensive guidance and support services are provided to assist students who are experiencing affective-domain issues that are impacting their ability to achieve academically. Although the intensity of the services provided vary based on the individual needs of students, all Grade 3-5 students performing in Levels 1 and 2, and Early Childhood students deemed to be at risk (including students in special education and English Language Learners) will receive appropriately targeted services. Early Intervention-Early childhood students (K-2) who are at-risk of not meeting standards as determined by their performance on ECLAS, and teacher assessment. MAterials and activities are selected in order to accommodate individual children's learning needs. Ongoing articulation between Early CHildhood intervention teachers and classroom teachers ensure congruence os the educational program and curriculum. Funded Reading and Math Programs- At-risk targeted youngsters are provided remediation in reading, mathematics, and ESL through enrichment in push-in and pull-out models a minimum of three times a week. Materials and activities are selected in order to accommodate individual children's learning needs. They are different from those used in regular classrooms, thus accommodating children's individual learning styles. Ongoing articulation between funded and classroom teachers ensure congruence of the educational program and curriculum. ESL(English as a Second Language)- All students who are in need of ESL services as per the LABR exam, are placed in this program. ESL teachers modify the curriculum to meet the needs of each individual students .Students are taught through a variety of specialized techniques and strategies. The program's goal is to have students reach the New York State English as a Second Language Standards. The NYSEESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language test) is given in May to assess student achievement. Based on the results of testing, students will be properly placed in September. After school programs/Extended Day for Literacy/Math - The after school program and that extended day program offers small group and individualized instruction to ensure at-risk students ' attainment of the State ELA and Math performance standards. During this additional time, varied instructional strategies and techniques are employed to meet students' learning needs The balanced literacy approach to reading includes read-aloud's, shared reading, guided reading and independent reading. The writing process is an integral component to the reading process. The regular school day programs are thereby uninterrupted as the children's learning opportunities are enhanced. |
