Dyker's Law Academy Program offers a unique opportunity for students to explore our legal system. The United States Department of Education recognized the value of Dyker Heights Law Studies Program and provided us with a grant. The New York State Legislature, the New York State Bar Association and the New York State Education Department have helped expand our law studies department by providing additional funds.

As part of this program students have experiences in civil, criminal, constitutional, and legislative law. The entire social studies curriculum has been revitalized with law related lessons. Students are learning how the legal system works. Our two courtrooms are used to provide opportunities for students to take part in real life courtroom situations. They learn about the legislative process through the extensive use of role playing, and research on pending legislation before the City Council, State Legislature and U.S. Congress.

Trips to the New York Supreme Court and the Criminal Court provide the students with an exciting glimpse into the legal system. Trips to City Hall and Washington, D.C. highlight the legal foundations that form the basis of our laws and civil codes and afford the students the opportunity to witness first hand the daily operation of government. Students from local elementary schools come to Dyker Heights Intermediate School and participate in the courtroom activities.
