MATHEMATICS ACADEMY- COMPUTER TECH CENTER

Students follow a logical progression from grades six to eight. In grade six fundamentals are emphasized. Logical thinking and problem solving, in addition to fundamentals, are stressed in grade seven. Geometry and algebra are introduced in grade eight. The Sequential I math course is offered to a select group of eighth graders. The course culminates with the taking of the Sequential I Regents exam in June. Regents credit is awarded to students passing the exam.

Computers assist in instruction. Highly motivational software is used to help teach as well as help stimulate the learning process. Students also learn programming in B.A.S.I.C. and are introduced into to use of computer graphics.

Competitions are also used to motivate learning and achievement. Mathematics teams represent Dyker in the District 20 competitions. We also have a yearly Math Bowl where students compete, based on their knowledge of mathematics.

For those who need special help, we provide peer tutoring as well as mathematics resource rooms, where teachers assist small groups of children.

We always try to show how mathematics is vital in everyone's daily life. Trips to such places as the New York Stock Exchange show children how mathematics is used in the "real" world today.
