Project Legal Lives is an on-going program that was initiated by District Attorney Charles J. Hynes. Dyker has been part of this exciting program since 1992. Each year two classes are chosen to participate. Two assistant district attorneys guide students through a host of legal experiences.

The
goals of this school partnership program are to instill positive values and
shape life-enhancing attitudes in our students. The program increases a
student's sense of self-worth and self-esteem to the point where he or she can
choose a positive lifestyle rather than one of drugs and/or prejudice. The Kings
County District Attorney's office plans to meet these goals as well as our
ultimate objective of a noticeable improvement in attitudes concerning bias and
the prevention and reduction of drug abuse, through the introduction of positive
role models and legal education.
The
Justice Program is a collaborative program involving students from
Community School District 20 and Community School District 4. Participating
students utilize a variety of primary and secondary sources, including the
Internet, to research topics on the legal system. Experts from a wide range of
areas, including the court system and medical fields, are available to speak to
students. The culmination is the development of a research paper, by students,
based upon their experiences and research activities in this program.

Facing
Ourselves is an innovative program recently added to our school in which
children are taught to deal positively with issues involving discrimination.
Incorporating an interdisciplinary approach, children read primary and secondary
sources of information which touch upon these issues. Discussions led by trained
professional staff members are incorporated into all planned activities.
