Social Studies has been the central core for the Dyker Magnet for several years. Students learn about history, geography, government, economics and the culture and customs of other people.

Sixth graders learn about Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Ancient law is presented in grade six. Students also study the Juvenile Court System and Citizenship in school and community.

American History is taught in grades seven and eight. We begin (in grade seven) with conditions that brought Columbus to the New World. By the end of grade eight we have brought the study of American History up to date. During grade seven, students are introduced to criminal law by studying such cases as the Zenger Case and the Miranda Supreme ruling. Later on in grade seven, after they study the Constitution, they are introduced to Constitutional Law. Legislative Law and Civil Law are introduced in grade eight. The two life-like courtrooms are used to motivate legal learning in all grades.

We use textbooks, video tapes and, where appropriate, computer simulations to enhance the learning process.

Each year, we hold a Social Studies Fair. At the fair, we display dioramas and charts made by our students. These exhibits are an extension of the topics that the students are learning about.

Our Law Magnet Program also includes an extensive study of government. We find information, through surveys and interviews, and then write interesting and informative newsletters.
