In Special Education, children follow the same curriculum as
regular education classes. The Special Education classes have some modifications
and appropriate remediation.

Mainstreaming is an integral part of the Special Education concept. Whenever possible, children in Special Education classes are placed into regular classes when they are ready to take advantage of such experiences. Special Education students participate in the Law Studies Program, the Architecture and Design Program, and the Fine Arts Programs (Art, Instrumental Band and Chorus). Special Education classes take advantage of the computer rooms and use appropriate software.

All school activities are open to Special Education
students-ranging from membership in Arista (the
school's honor society for students with the highest grades) to participation in
the art contests and helping in school wide activities, such as the
Team-Up-to-Clean-Up Campaign. Trips and guest speakers are used to make students
more interested in a wide variety of learning experiences.
Our magnet program was designed with Special Education as an integral component. All special magnet programs are open to Special Education students.

Project Power is an
extracurricular program that provides the Special Education students with
comprehensive career exploration experiences. This program is divided into
two areas. The first being Project Drive which provides students with training
in the areas of self-awareness, career awareness, career exploration and
decision-making. The second area is Project Power which provides students with
monitored employment and follow up support that enhances the process of career
exploration and employability skills development.
Due to this program the students in the Special Education Department at Dyker Heights have developed an entrepreneurial business called the Dyker Height's Sweet Treats Shop, involving the making and selling of different chocolate candy lollipops. In the present school year the business has been expanded to include button making and engraving.
