The McKinley Beacon Center provides a
safe and secure environment in which free after-school and weekend educational,
recreational, athletic services and activities, and counseling supports are offered to the
community at large, ages 8 to adult. Registration forms are available in Room 127. Our
hours of operation are from 9 a.m. - 10 p.m., Monday-Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The aim of Project Stop is to
teach students that conflict is natural and that there are peaceful solutions to problems.
Our goal is to develop techniques that will eliminate patterns that contribute to violent
behavior. Meditation can help settle many disagreements before conflicts grow. It is a way
of solving conflicts by using a person who is not involved in the conflict to help settle
it.
SMG2000 is a version of The

Students in 721, 712, 713, and 821 researched bridges on the internet. Students were teamed with a partner and each team designed a type of bridge that they wanted to build. Each team designed a bridge that they wanted to build. Each team built the bridge they designed. In class, each team reflected and typed a report on what they have learned about bridges and their structure. Each team gave an oral presentation to their class on their bridge. The bridges were displayed in McKinley's Art Show.
Ms. M. Kaplan (Reading) received a
grant from the Theater Development Fund (TDF) to take all of her Corrective Reading
classes to see two Broadway shows this year, free of charge. They saw Ragtime in October.
TDF also provides at McKinley eight theater workshops by a teaching artist.
McKinley has been selected

with a practicing physician or health professional. At the end of the program, the Junior
Fellows will present the results of their research. Ms. R. Oechsner will coordinate the
program. Cooperating teachers are Ms. D. Cashin (Science), Ms. N. Economos (Technology),
and Ms. M. Colome (Librarian).
