Volunteer of the Month

Let’s start the New Year by saying THANK YOU to Amina Asad – a great parent and a great supporter of PS 102.  Amina is an alumnus of PS 102 and as she lives on the block, she knows a lot about the school community and many teachers and students past and present.  Amina attends every PTA Executive Board Meeting and has worked faithfully on the Book Fair, Craft Fair, Plant Sale and other events since her son, Yazeed, now an eighth grader, entered first grade.  As a new PTA mom, she was recruited to run for Vice President her first year and after winning the election, served in this office a few years. She has worked as a Learning Leader and on the Alumni Committee, school pictures and this year she will chair the International Celebration on January 20th  (and I hope she will bring 4 pots of her delicious sage tea!) Although her daughter, Amira, is graduating this year, we will welcome her back in two years when her youngest, Janine, will enter Kindergarten and we certainly hope she will stay involved in-between! Amina urges all parents to show up at a PTA event or meeting and get involved. She would like to point out that parents with younger children are always welcome to bring them.  Thank you Amina J

Science Fair Projects are due in classrooms on        January 31st.  You may contact Mrs. Willie by writing a note or leaving a message at the office if you have questions. Display boards are available for sale ($5) in the lunchroom from 9-10 a.m.

Text Box: Resolutions can give your child a fresh start in 2006

Making New Year’s resolutions can put your child on track to doing better in the new year—both at home and in school. Follow these steps to help your child make resolutions:

·	Explain what New Year’s resolutions are—promises you make to yourself.
·	Ask your child what he’d like to accomplish in the New Year. What areas would he like to improve? Your child should come up with ideas to feel ownership in the resolution.
·	Avoid telling him what resolutions to make. You may want him to promise to keep his room clean. He may want to memorize statistics of his favorite sports players.
·	Guide him with suggestions related to learning and doing better in school. Perhaps he’s interested in learning a new skill—a musical instrument or a foreign language.
·	Encourage him to be realistic. It’s unlikely he’ll be able to give up video games for a week, or get an “A” on every test and assignment. But he can give up video games one day a week. And he can raise his grades.
·	Help him be specific. Doing better in school is too general. Paying attention in class, doing homework and reading every day are specific activities that lead to better grades.
·	Set up a way for your child to measure his progress. A chart or calendar on the wall will work.

THANKS

to Ms. Mealing, Mrs. Syrdahl, Ms.Famoso and Santa Claus for a wonderful Bay View Chorus Holiday Concert – but most of all to all the students who shared their beautiful voices – WOW!

…to the PTA, GO and all parent, students and staff who donated to the holiday toy drive, the used book drive, Penny Harvest and the Thanksgiving food drive – PS 102 is a very generous school!

…to the Jindyehs and other parent volunteers who pulled off another fun Family Sports Night – those of you who missed it also missed seeing Mrs. Dovi hula-hoop!

…to the wonderful parents of Fernando Carrillo, class 2-102, who found and returned my lost purse.

…to a beautiful mom who walked home in the rain to get dry socks and shoes for a student with wet feet.

PS 102 is a place where many people do kind things for each other each day. It makes working here a real pleasure.  I look forward to the happy surprises that will come my way this year.
