SAFETY

For the safety of all our children, everyone is asked to present a picture ID to enter the school and parents are asked to wait until 8:30 a.m. to enter the school lobby.  If you move or change phone numbers, please be sure to send a note to your child’s teacher and to the main office.  It is the parent’s responsibility to make sure that the blue card, including emergency contacts, is accurate and up-to-date. School safety rules are posted in the lobby in English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Urdu and Russian.  We also ask that you please drive carefully - especially when dropping off and picking up children.  Look for a flier on an upcoming traffic safety course being offered by one of our teachers on Saturday, November 20th!

CEC MEETING

P.S. 102 will host the November Region 7 CEC (Community Education Council) meeting on November 9th  from 7-9 p.m. The 12-member council of parents, which was elected by PTA officers last spring, will discuss school safety in Region 7 as well as other topics.

Volunteer of the Month

The staff of PS 102 knows Laurie Glass best as “The Leveler”.  I’m not sure how many parents know what leveling is – it is certainly not as ominous as it sounds.  Laurie spends many hours a week in classrooms evaluating and marking books by reading level for classroom libraries as required by the Balanced Literacy Curriculum.  So when your child brings home a book to read with a neat “C” or “P” appearing in a corner in black marker – it is likely the book was leveled by Laurie. Since she started volunteering in 1999, she has helped many teachers set up their libraries and this year she has been spending a lot of time reorganizing the Parent/Teacher Resource Room.  Laurie has also worked at PTA events such as the Book Fair and Pumpkin Patch and worked with the reading teachers on the Reading Incentive Program. Laurie is a talented crafter and you will have a chance to meet this legendary parent volunteer at the PTA Craft Fair on December 3rd.  Stop by her table and say “Thank You!”

Greetings Parents!  HeartShare is still accepting applications for its After School Program, although your child will most likely be placed on our waiting list.  If you have any questions, feel free to reach the program’s site coordinator, Patricia DiDino, at (718) 567-2365.  A reminder – the HeartShare program will be closed on November 16th and November 17th. Please pick up your children at their regular dismissal time.

Mrs. Hum and the Garden Friends are curious about how the Unique Minds activities are going. We would love to hear from you. Drop a note in our mailbox!

FYI:

PARENT BULLETIN BOARD/INFO TABLE

The PTA, Parent Coordinator and Staff at PS 102 post all school, community and Department of Education notices that may be of interest to our families on the board just inside the main doors on the right.  Fliers on

the table below are for parents to take and specific information available to ESL parents, parents requiring translation in Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish, PTA events, tutoring, homework help, health and nutrition are available in the drawers to the right of the table.  We also have a free book basket –as a way for parents and teachers to recycle books they are no longer using.

NOVEMBER QUOTE:
A family is a unit composed not only of children but men, women, an occasional animal and the common cold.” Ogden Nash

As the weather turns colder, please remember to dress your children appropriately.  Lost jackets, sweaters, etc. can often be found in the child’s classroom or the blue lost and found box at the back of the auditorium.  Unclaimed items will be donated to charity.  If your child has a fever, please keep him or her at home. During cold and flu season, please be sure to remind your children to cover their coughs and sneezes and to wash their hands often with soap and water.

COOL SCHOOL RESOURCES:

Parent Library

If you are willing to climb a few flights – there are many resources available to parents in Room 432, the Parent/Teacher Resource Room.  Your parent coordinator will be there to assist you on Tues. and Thurs. mornings from 8:30-10:00, or other times by appointment. If your child has outgrown any educational software, tapes, etc., please consider donating them to the resource room.

Thanks to all the families who came out to support our first P.S. 102 Movie Night on Friday October 22nd! The popcorn machine was not yet in place – but is being purchased for future events.  This event was SOLD OUT and we apologize for having to turn away some families. The G.O. raised money for their graduation trip by selling snacks and the PTA collected a $1 entry fee to support all the great work they do for our school.  Four lucky winners received door prizes generously donated by a parent.  A special thanks to the PTA for a very festive pumpkin patch (and to State Senator Marty Golden for donating 600 pumpkins) and to the School Aids who decorated the building and shared their holiday spirit with the kids – making this Halloween extra fun.
