Volunteer of the Month

Rima Beydoun is a lovely, lively mom of two.  Her son, Mohamed, is now a 3rd grader and her daughter, Aya, started Kindergarten this fall.  Rima completed the Learning Leaders training last year and immediately took on the challenge of working with three first grade girls at once who needed help with math.  It was also helpful that Rima speaks Arabic as two of the girls were newcomers to the country and had little English.  Bi-lingual volunteers are very valuable to help children feel more comfortable and understand what is going on in class, and to learn English and math more quickly.  Rima has been an enthusiastic and active PTA volunteer for the last 2 years, and took on the role of Chair of the Box Top Committee this year, she has helped as a volunteer translator and attends most workshops to learn more about how to help her own children and those she tutors. Rima is a joyful woman - everyone notices when she enters the room as she dances a lot and smiles more!  When you meet this wonderful volunteer and mom – please say THANK YOU!

SAVE YOUR USED PRINTER CARTRIDGES AND OLD CELL PHONES – PS 102 will get money for school supplies! Just drop your used cartridges and outdated phones in the box in the main office or lobby.

Thank you -  To all those who have already contributed!

RESOURCE ROOM:  Parents are invited to visit Room 432 on Wed. or Thurs. mornings from 8:45-10:00 to borrow from your PC’s growing collection of Parenting Books and educational materials.

Text Box: Building Responsibility
Try using logical consequences to teach your child
It’s 9:00 a.m. when the phone rings. “I forgot my lunch,” your fifth grader says. What do you do?
If it’s the only time she’s ever left her lunch at home, and if you know she has a big test that afternoon, you might take the lunch to school. But what if this is the second time this week?
You might try using logical consequences. Allow your child to learn from her mistakes. Stay calm and don’t lose your temper. But don’t take the lunch to school, either. “Honey, I told you that if you left your lunch again, I would not bring it to you. I’m sorry, but I can’t do it today.”
This statement works because it is:
•	Related to what your child did. If she forgets her lunch, she may have to be hungry for a day.
•	Respectful. You didn’t tell your child she was an idiot. You didn’t yell at her. You simply told her that you were not able to bail her out this time.
•	Reasonable. Denying a child lunch for a week would not be reasonable. Letting her miss lunch for one day is. Have a healthy snack waiting when she walks in the door.
Logical consequences help your child manage her behavior. Otherwise, you may find yourself driving her lunch to her college dorm or her office!
