Volunteer of the Month

Teresa Romero showed up early to volunteer this year. The week before school started she came in with her sons Ezra (4th grade) and Jarah (2nd grade) and finished up painting the four-square and some outlining on the flat playground in the large yard.  Many in the PTA worked hard on this project last spring, but Teresa emerged as the creative force –  adding drawings of children in one area and being the one most able to paint straight lines! Teresa developed her steady hand and creativity working as a hair stylist for over 20 years in her previous home in Texas and continues to take private customers at home.   Since moving to Brooklyn, she has become an invaluable member of our school community - taking on the role of PTA financial secretary and she will chair the bake sale and international tea this year.  Teresa is a loving and fun-loving mom who also proves to be a skilled mediator and parent advocate.  She will be a great asset to the School Leadership Team. When you meet this amazing mom please give her a big THANK YOU and if you can spare a few hours – offer to help her finish the painting!

PS 102 is EMPOWERED  This year, under the DOE restructuring, PS 102 has chosen the empowerment support structure – joining a network of 26 schools from districts 15, 20, 21 and 31 led by experienced educator Neal Opromalla.  This allows our principal more autonomy on decisions regarding budget, staff development and

assessments as we are held closely accountable for each student’s progress.  For more information come out to the

CEC meeting this week, or see the following web sites on the empowerment support structure: http://schools.nyc.gov/Offices/Empowerment/default.htm

Karina Costantino is our new D20 Superintendent (718) 759-4912.

Text Box: Foster an attitude of success in your child this school year
Henry Ford said it best: “If you think you can—or you think you can’t—you’re right.” But how can you foster an attitude of success in your child? One strategy is to give your child positive, accurate feedback. Kids make slow progress. Learning to ride a bike, or divide by seven, doesn’t happen overnight. Here are three steps to take to help your child see that he can succeed:
1.	Tell your child the progress you’ve seen. You could say, “The way you describe Grandpa’s workshop in your writing makes me feel like I’m there.” Or, “That drawing of the human heart helps me see exactly how blood moves.”
2.	Link your child’s success with his own effort. “You stuck with that math problem. Now you found the right answer.” “You took the time to copy over that book report. It’s much neater—and you corrected a few misspelled words.”
3.	Give your child confidence to take the next step. Sometimes, kids need a little boost if they’re having trouble. So remind your child of a time when his effort paid off. “Remember how you worked until you memorized your times tables? I’ll bet the same thing will work for learning states and capitals.”
You’ll build your child’s belief that he can succeed. You’ll also help him recognize successful ways to solve problems.

Text Box: ESL CLASSES: Regretfully, ESL classes will not be offered at PS 102 this fall due to space limitations. An updated “blue sheet” of local classes is in the parent table drawer marked “ESL information”. Any feedback or info on additional classes is welcome. Look forward to workshops in translation in Arabic, Spanish and Chinese coming this school year. It’s great to be back at PS 102. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year ahead and to recruiting new parent volunteers.  I encourage all parents to get active in the PTA and hope to meet you at the opening meeting on Sept. 20th at 4:30 pm, or the next executive board meeting on October 4 at 8:45 a.m.  I hope some of you will also consider training to become a Learning Leader Volunteer. If you are working – you can come out and support evening school activities or family fun nights.  Becoming involved at the school shows your kids that you really care about school and their academic progress.
