Software<= span class=3DGramE>- the pr= ograms or applications that a user works with on a computer

Hardware<= span class=3DGramE>- the ph= ysical components (parts) that make up a computer system

CPU- the CE= NTRAL PROCESSING UNIT is the “brain” of the computer

Input device<= /b>- a piec= e of hardware that allows the user to put information INTO the computer

Output device= - a piec= e of hardware that supplies the user with information processed by the computer (info that comes OUT of the computer in a variety of ways)

Keyboard<= span class=3DGramE>- an inp= ut device used to enter commands and type information into the computer

Mouse- an inp= ut device that controls the cursor on a computer screen

Joystick<= span class=3DGramE>- an inp= ut device for games that can be used in place of the mouse or keyboard

Monitor- an out= put device that displays graphic and video images

Printer- an out= put device that creates a hard copy

Modem- a piec= e of hardware that allows one computer to communicate to another computer through outside lines

Disks- floppy= disks, cd-roms, or flash drives used to store information

Scanner- an inp= ut device that can transfer a picture or printed text into a computer

Clicking<= span class=3DGramE>- quickly pressing on the mouse button ONCE

Dragging<= span class=3DGramE>- moving= objects around the computer screen with the mouse

Cursor- a line= , arrow, or other symbol on a computer screen that is controlled by the mouse

Icon- a small picture on a computer screen that represents a program, tool, or activity

Highlight- a dark border ar= ound a word or object, or a colored line across text

Tool Bar- object = on screen containing shortcuts for operations used most often within a particu= lar program

Graphic- another word for a picture or clip-art on a compter screen

Title Bar- object = on screen where the name of a document or program appears

Menu- the to= p bar across the window of a screen where selections can be made

Backspace/Del= ete Key- a key used to er= ase text or cut highlighted objects

Control Key- one of the speci= al keys that allows the user to enter commands using the keyboard

Alt Key- one of the speci= al keys that allows the user to enter commands using the keyboard

= Holding down the Alt Key and pressing F4 allows the user a fast way = to exit a program

Function Keys= - a row of special= keys that allow the user to enter specific commands within a particular program<= /p>

Number Pad- a sect= ion of the computer keyboard that is used with the built in calculator

Space Bar= - a long= , narrow key at the bottom of the keyboard that moves the cursor one space to the ri= ght

Byte- one si= ngle “character” of information

Megabyte<= span class=3DGramE>- 1, 048= ,567 bytes of information

Soft Copy= - a copy= or file that is saved to a computer’s hard drive or on a disk

Hard Copy= - a copy= or file that is printed out

Insertion Point- the nam= e given to the cursor in a word processing program

Fonts- various styles of “type” available in word processing programs

Access- the ab= ility to open or work with a particular program or file

Pixels- fine dots that c= ombine to form images on the computer screen

WWW- the World Wide Web, a part of the Internet

E-Mail- electronic mail that is sent through a network or over the internet
