P.S. 163
has long been a pillar of education for the Bath Beach community. Our school
is home to approximately 650 students (grades Pre-K through 5) and a staff
of 63. The building was constructed in 1909; therefore, we
have been going through a great deal of construction.
P.S. 163 serves an ethnically diverse
population, including Asians, Eastern Europeans, Hispanics, Arabics and
African Americans. Many of these children are English Language Learners
and have special language learning needs. We also host children from
the Fort Hamilton Army Base.
At present there are many programs
and services offered which are successful and worthwhile. Funded programs
include Corrective Reading, English as a Second Language, Reading Recovery
and Super Start Pre-Kindergarten. Other support services include
resource room/teacher consultant, guidance, speech therapy, adaptive physical
education and occupational therapy. Our students also participate
in Conflict Resolution, The DARE drug prevention program, and the Family
Living Program.
Special Education is an important
part of P.S. 163. In addition to being mainstreamed in all activities,
the children are exposed to special teaching strategies to meet their academic
need.
