Designated as a Priority School, P.S. 196 is under new leadership. While we met our projected reading goals for 1998-99, our students (95% of whom receive free lunch) continue to score lowest in the District. Last year, starting at "ground zero," and with funding from NYS Department of Technology Education, we implemented a "Then & Now" technology initiative for Grades 4-6. Immensely successful (our 4th graders scored 5th in the District on the NYS ELA Test), we propose to extend the program to our Early Childhood classes. In doing so, our goals are to: (1) complete an interdisciplinary English Language Arts/Social Studies curricula (Grades K-6/aligned with the new standards) which seamlessly integrates technology; (2) train our Early Childhood teachers to integrate technology into classroom instruction/assessment; (3) equip our Early Childhood classes with basic hardware/software; (4) provide a motivating/hands-on approach to learning drawing from students' strengths; (5) provide "technological parity" for our students with peers in other districts.
