P.S. 20 Manhattan

Read about projects presented at the P.S. 20 Learning Fair by the first grade.

Ms. Marrero's Class: 1-212

The students in class 1-212 explored the Saint Mark's Church and completed a project in which they depicted the inside and outside of the church.



Ms. Lin's Class: 1-230

Ms. Lin combined social studies, literacy, science and math to explore families and their celebrations from different around the world.

Ms. Slater's Class: 1-220

The students of 1-220 studied about pushcarts and peddlers in the Lower East Side from Long Ago. Fourteen thousand pushcart peddlers sold candy, roast corn, baked potatoes, vegetables, hot dogs, soft drinks, clothing, pots and pans. This is where many people shopped before the year 1938. The City of New York then opened markets located on Essex Street for these peddlers. They paid 25 cents a day to rent their space long ago.

Ms. Adorno's Class: 1-240

Class 1-240 discussed what their neighborhood looked like in 1903. How it felt to live in 1903 and compared facts from then with what we see experience today in 2003. Activities included creating a time line, a comparative graph, and personal journals about comparing coming to the new world and how we live today.

Mr. Robin's Class: 1-226

Students of 1-226 studied games played on the Lower East Side then and now. The project was done in coordination with History FirstHand. The children were videotaped and photographed playing games of today and in the past. The children learned games of the past and compared them to games of today. Outdoor games such as Kick The Can, Stoopball, Stickball, Red Light Green Light One Two Three were learned and played.

 

Ms. Yee's Class: 1-302

Class 1-302 completed an integrated thematic unit entitled "We Are Family". The unit was geared to help the children realize that all families are different. During the study students evaluated the importance of their own families and individual family members. With the help of Mr. Zilberzweig, the children created their own family tree and a "Class Family Tree". They also wrote and illustrated stories about their own families.
