P.S. 20 Manhattan

Read about projects presented at the P.S. 20 Learning Fair by the fifth grade.

Ms. Kane's Class: 5-330

The students of 5-330 explored outer space. They went to the planetarium and wrote research reports. Some of the topics researched included: the history of flight, inner and outer planets, astrounauts and constellations. Class 5-330 also created Landforms and Water Way Models. The children used plasticine to create thematic models that included oceans, lakes, rivers, mountains, islands and hills. The students drew maps of their models. With Mr. Baskin they created multimedia presentations of their creative process.

Ms. Joseph's Class: 5-315

Class 5-315 did research reports, sculptures, collages, and posters of thirteen famous New Yorkers. Their lives and accomplishments were presented in PowerPoint presentations as well as video. Our special thanks to Ms. Kufert and Mr. Baskin for their assistance.

Ms. Gluck's Class: 5-316

Class 5-316 researched New York buildings. They worked on images of architectural details which will be installed in the squares at the entrance to P.S. 20. In addition, with the help of Henry Street Settlement and Noel Copeland students created ceramic panels of Lower East Side landmarks to be installed in the front of P.S. 20.


Mr. Louie's Class: 5-324

Class 5-324 interviewed people who attended elementary school on the Lower East Side. In addition, reports were written about alumni of P.S. 20 such as Paul Muni, George Gershwin, Edward G. Robinson, Senator Jacob Javitz, Harry Golden, and Irving Caesar. Biographies of famous alumni were mounted on a large model of the original P.S. 20.

Mr. Guzman's Class: 5-348

Students of class 5-348 brainstormed ideas to enhance the yard entrance to P.S. 20. Then they transferred their ideas to paper and design, and finally produced a 3D model. Their designs will eventually be built to give P.S. 20's yard entrance an aesthethic design that fulfills function and connects to our school community and theme.


 

Ms. Yang's Class: 5/6-345

Class 5/6-345 studied the history of Chinese immigrants to the United States. They focused on the comparison of the lives of Chinese immigrants in Chinatown New York then and now; including the students own immigrant stories.
