In 1997, as
part of PENCIL's Principal For A Day, Mr. Mark Larkin (retired
executive from Price Water House) spent the day with Ms. Haime
learning of The Frederick Douglass Academy.
Ms. Haime's
dream was to start a school store. With a grant of $5,000, The Little
Shop of Scholars was started. In 1998 Carrie Genuso, V.P. of the GAP
was Principal For A Day and learned of FDA.
Ms. Genuso
was impressed with FDA, the students and staff. This developed into
the FDA/GAP collaborative.
The CEO of
the GAP, Mr. Mickey Drexler has visited the school on numerous
occasions. He has spoken to our students about his exciting careers
and has motivated our students to strive for academic excellence. The
GAP has provided scholarships, field visits, internships and
employment opportunities for our students.
