Carnival 2009: FDA In Brazil by NIKKITA MCPHERSON
Dancing as the horizon above me rose up was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. Starting at 8pm, we watched floats more majestic and breathtaking than those on Eastern Parkway and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade stride through the streets. Women were placed graciously upon these superhuman contraptions by cranes, and we realized the moment of excitement and pride the Samba schools felt as the floats went by. 2 Am. No time for a nap. We traveled to our hotel, where we changed into our costumes, hats, and harnesses. With great anticipation, we made our way back to our holding spot in the parade. 3 Am. Still not time to march, yet we distracted ourselves by taking pictures with the band leaders. With them, we were celebrities, and we were enthusiastic as we sang our school song, believing that our Samba School would be victorious during Carnival. 7 Am. With oozing satisfaction, we paraded down the runway for about 30 minutes, a moment in my life that I could never forget. Were those 30 minutes worth the 12-hour wait? ABSOLUTELY! Thank you Mr. Montiero and Dr. Hodge! Adventurous-At-Heart, Tracy, Kyle, and Robert Mirabal
