Our Trip to Canada on April 2nd - April 6th 2004

The goals of this trip to Montreal and Quebec City were to investigate cultural and historical connections between the United States and Canada, as well as to provide authentic learning opportunities for the students to engage in cultural discourse using the French language.  Interestingly, the students' accomplishments surpassed our learning objectives.

The trip to Canada was a memorable learning experience for all participants.  The students learned about appreciating different cultural norms, overcoming obstacles and improving interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. in addition students also learned about cultural parallels between the Quebequois and the African - American dilemma, their struggles to be accepted and choosing not to forget their past hence the Quebequois motto "je me souviemes" translated as "I remember."  Our students elaborated on these parallels from which many passionate discussions ensued on the bus and in the hotels' common area.

This motto "Je me souviens"  embodies the Quebequois values and culture.  It characterizes almost all aspects of this previously enclosed city and it's people. We could hear the passion resonate in their voices in discussion about their city.  Their cultural pride was eminant in their maintenance of various battle sites such as: the Plains of Abraham, the Citadel, the walls surrounding the city, the Chateau Frontenac and much more.  These were sites to behold.  During our stay, much of our time was spent consuming sumptuous meals and hiking throughout the city while admiring the architectural designs that embraced and symbolized aspects of their past. It was evident that everything meant something.  From the crown on top of the parliament building to the emblems in the interior including the laurels surrounding a capitalized "C" signifying endeavor, struggle, peace and victory.

There is no doubt that this was a very interesting, passionate and enjoyable trip.  We would definitely like to have a similar experience on out next trip.

Here a some quote from students who participated in this unforgettable trip.

"This trip has taught to be mindful of others. Although nobody had any major problems with each other,  I still learned that there are others around me, and you'll never really know what you're missing until you've spoken to some of them." Stephanie Gibson

"I had the time of my life in Canada. Quebec was a masterpiece of architecture and the people not only only remember but they honor their past." Crystal Edwards
