Hands Across the Ocean

FDA & Stuyvesant students meet with Israeli & Arab students

In February of 1995, 15 students from FDA and 10 students from Stuyvesant high school took part in  a program called Hands Across the Ocean (HAO). We spent 10 days in Israel and met with 25 students from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Nazereth. Together the students visited various sights in Israel which included a kibbutz, Mount Masada, The Dead Sea, the old city of Jerusalem and a school for Ethopian Jews. We enjoyed shopping on Benyahuda Street and dancing at a community center in Nazareth. Students lived together and visited the schools and homes of the Israeli students. During this program students learned more about each other's cultures, religions, countries and ways of  life. We went shopping together, listened to music together, danced together and ate together. Many of  us have stayed in touch with one another through letters cards and e-mail. It has been an experience that  all of us will carry with us for the rest of our lives.
