  • School Leadership Team
    Minutes for December 19, 2007

Approval of minutes from November meeting

    Professional Development/School Leadership Training
    * Many members attended the meeting Nov. 29th
    * Gave a good review of the SLT and the objectives of the team
    * We know that we can anticipate writing a new CEP soon
    * We haven't received any information about the new template or outline for the CEP
    * With clarification at the meeting we know that we are not behind in terms of writing the CEP and we are up to date with what we are doing currently
    * The CEP is addressed during leadership meetings and does not change much from year to year
    * A few members inquired about the 'green book' made available to SLT members several years back with guidelines for the team- Ms. Steppel will look into seeing if they are still available

    Quality Review
    * The final report was made public
    * Information is available on the DOE website
    * Different schools have their reviews at different points in the school year
    * There are 2 accountability tools schools are rated with - Progress Report and Quality Review
    * We had many 'outstanding' and many 'well-developed' ratings on the Quality Review
    * We received an overall rating of 'well developed' and our wonderful school community is reflected in the report

    Progress Report
    * We received an 'A'
    * There have been concerns about the reports raised by parents, teachers and administrators
    * There is an intricate formula for determining the grade on the progress report
    * There will be another learning survey in the spring and it will most likely go home to parents via the students
    * The learning survey is just one portion of the progress report

    Fundraising/Grant Writing
    * Ms. Perez wanted to know if the PTA would like her to pursue the Lowe's grant discussed at the last meeting
    * The PTA Exec. Board is not sure if that is an appropriate direction for the grant as the location of the PTA room has changed in the past and can change again in the future
    * Some members suggested directing the focus toward possible technology grants that would benefit the PTA as well as the rest of the school
    * Ms. Steppel is looking into applying for a technology/computer upgrade grant for the computer lab
    * We need to apply for grants we qualify for
    * The Bill Gates foundation offers parent laptops - this can be an option to explore for the PTA
    * Mrs. Pilosi looked into several grants and distributed a packet to team members with the information she found
    * It is suggested that grant writing needs to be started in the spring so they are ready to go in the fall when many of the grant applications are due
    * Mrs. Leone will send a survey out to the teachers to see if there is any interest in grants or grant writing
    * Several members are looking into various fundraising activities that do not involve interrupting classroom instruction

    Upcoming Meetings
    * Wednesday January 16th at 7:30 a.m.
    * Wednesday February 13th at 3:30 p.m.

Leadership Committee Minutes

November 20, 2007

Approval of minutes from October

Grant Writing

  • Mrs. Whelan did some research on a grant proposed last meeting and will update her findings at the December meeting
  • Mrs. Pilosi researched some grants as well and found that some required a membership fee or are due in the fall
  • It was suggested that the bulk of the grant research is done in the spring in order to be prepared for fall deadlines
  • We do not qualify for some of the grants available because we are not an inner city or Title I school
  • Mrs. Perez researched a Lowe’s grant for a parent room
  • Ms. Steppel suggested Ms. Perez meet with the PTA executive board to see if they are interested in what the grant has to offer
  • Ms. Steppel will look into registering the school online for the Lowe’s grant if the PTA is interested

Professional Development/Training for SLT Members

  • There has been concerns about the possibility of mandatory attendance for SLT members at trainings in order to receive the stipend at the end of the year
  • There are meetings coming up and it is suggested that all members attend one of the trainings in order to receive the stipend in June
  • There is an additional meeting that was not on the original list Ms. Leone emailed that Ms. Steppel let the team know about (11/26 at 3:30 at P.S. 221)
  • There is also a training on 11/26 at I.S. 67 that some members may be attending
  • The meetings provide members with a general training on SLT regulations, procedures, etc.
  • When SLT first started there was a separate and large budget for the committee-there is not a separate budget anymore
  • Ms. Steppel needs to set monies aside in her budget for the SLT stipends for 12 members
  • Some schools forgo the stipend and use the monies in another way for the school-Ms. Steppel in no way suggests the members on the committee need to do this

Progress Report

  • Parents received envelopes at Parent Teacher Conferences which included a copy of the progress report
  • There has been a lot of talk about the report and what it means and what is does not mean
  • We are all thrilled with the ‘A’ and it is all thanks to the entire P.S. 133 community-everyone should be very proud of the hard work and efforts that are made here daily
  • There is an intricate formula for determining school scores and cohorts-may even be changed for next year
  • Schools are put into cohorts of 41 schools (20 schools performing above your school, 20 schools performing below your school, and your school)-your school is compared to these schools which are from all over the city
  • A large portion of the progress report is based on student progress and performance on state tests over the course of 4-6 days of testing during the year for the 4th and 5th grades
  • The performance of the 4th and 5th grades is reflective of the work done in grades K-3 but the report theoretically holds 2 groups accountable (4th and 5th)
  • They count students that go up in scores as well as students that go down in scores
  • There has been some talk of redesigning the learning surveys for next year

Quality Review Report

  • Ms. Steppel received the draft and is very happy with the results
  • The report is not public knowledge yet-we have to wait until it is posted on-line before it is made public to the school community

Upcoming SLT Meetings

  • Wednesday December 19th at 3:30
  • Wednesday January 16th at 7:30
