Welcome to the Ramp-Up to Literacy I program (Grade 9). This specialized reading program allows you to explore a variety of literary genres and reading experiences including Independent Reading, the “Read Aloud/ Talk Aloud” segment, and Cross-Age Tutoring. This 90-minute class is designed to assist struggling readers in developing the skills they need to become proficient readers and lifelong learners. Students must be prepared for class daily with an Independent Reading book—a novel they have selected themselves—and their loose leaf binders. Independent Reading will take place in class for 20 minutes per day, and will be continued each night for homework for 30 minutes. Course Overview Read Aloud texts: Monster by Walter Dean Myers (realistic fiction) Living Up the Street by Gary Soto (memoir) Mama’s Girl by Veronica Chambers (memoir) Read Aloud texts: A Family Apart by Joan Lowery Nixon (historical fiction) The Orphan Train Riders (non-fiction) Read Aloud Materials: various poems and excerpted poet biographies ranging from Shakespeare to modern slam poetry. Unit 4: Connecting Literature to Life Read Aloud Text: A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer (memoir) various children's picture books for Cross-Age Tutoring
