Transition services for GCHS students are a very important function of the ISS Department.  Services are overseen by Ms. Donna Williams, our Assistant Principal, and administered by our Transition Coordinator, Ms. Bea Sanders.

Among the services available to our students are:

   VESID:

The Mission of the Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) is to promote educational equity and excellence for students with disabilities while ensuring that they receive the rights and protection to which they are entitled; assure appropriate continuity between the child and adult services systems; and provide the highest quality vocational rehabilitation and independent living services to all eligible persons as quickly as those services are required to enable them to work and live independent, self-directed lives.

The ISS Department and VESID work cooperatively to place graduating students in both vocational and work programs where they are able to work, learn and live independently.

Co-Op Tech High School:

The School of Cooperative Technical Education provides students with the opportunity to learn both the traditional trades-based skills along with a variety of state-of-the-art technologies. Students who attend will develop the capabilities that will enable them to become independent, self-supporting, lifelong, productive contributors to, and prosper economically and emotionally in, an increasingly complex and technologically based society.

Many of our students concurrently attend GCHS classes in the morning and are later transported to Co-Op Tech to continue career studies there in the afternoons.

Work-Study Program:

Many of our ISS Department students participate in a work-study program administered by Ms. Sanders where they concurrently learn and earn by attending GCHS classes and working part-time either inside school or within the greater community.  A large variety of positions are available, based on student interests and abilities.

College Entrance Opportunities:

Students wishing to enter college following high school are assisted in many ways by our Transition Coordinator.  Field trips to various local colleges are scheduled.  Students are provided with complete guidance on college entrance requirements and procedures.  The link above provides Federal information on the rights of persons with special needs in post-secondary education.
