Project Read-Literacy Enhancement Project

The Literacy Enhancement Project at P.S. 90 has now completed it's fourth year. Our two Literacy Enhancement teams work collaboratively with the classroom teachers to extend literacy skills in small group settings. The teams use a thematic approach through the use of high quality, content rich, nonfiction and fiction literature to promote student literacy.

Each team pushes-in to first, second, and third grade classes on a daily basis. The teams plan and work together with the classroom teacher to develop small group instruction. The ratio of each group is ten students to one teacher. The focus is to improve reading, writing, listening, speaking, and higher level thinking skills across curriculum areas. This program has incorporated using many techniques along with very specific reading and writing skill development techniques to help our students work towards meeting the New York State High Performance Standards.

Second Grade Galimoto Project

After reading Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams children created their own galimotos and wore sculptures. Then we wrote about the experience. (A galimoto is a toy vehicle made of wires.)

I made glasses out of wires. It was very easy making the glasses. Everybody liked my glasses. They wanted to wear my glasses. I used y favorite colors, yellow and white. I made the glasses by twisting and bending the wires. I made it with two circles and tow short and straight lines of wires.

I did allot of twisting and then rolling with my wire and pipe cleaners. the petals of my flower are pink. The stem and the leaves are green. The center of my flower is black.

The story Galimoto was set in Africa. After working with the story, the Literacy Enhancement groups worked with students to research Africa. After organizing information on charts and Thinking Maps, children began writing essays. Here are some examples of the final products.

Africa

We learned important facts about Africa. The weather of Africa is very hot. People wear short pants. The women wear short skirts to keep them cool.

In Africa, the women go to the mill to grind the maize and cook it into porridge. In Africa people eat with their hands.

Some of the animals in Africa are different than American animals. The leopard lives by itself. It does not have a tribe. Some of the other animals are the lion, giraffe, and the hippopotamus.

I enjoyed learning about Africa. My family and I are from Africa. It was fun learning about my home country.

The things in Africa are different from America. The homes in Africa are different. The homes are made out of dry mud bricks. The houses have no doors and no glass for the windows. The land in Africa is hard. The land is smooth and dry. The land in Africa has lots of sand. The weather is hot. There is little rain in Africa.

Now our class has learned about Africa. I enjoyed learning about another part of the world.
