CODE OF BEHAVIOR

The school will be a place of learning.
There must be an atmosphere based on mutual respect, concern and a
desire to get the best education possible.
Students are expected to be courteous and to respect
the property and personal rights and feelings of others. Fighting, profanity, vandalism and harassment
are not acceptable.
Students
are expected to be in class on time and to demonstrate courteous behavior
so that each individual’s rights are respected and everyone can learn in an
orderly environment.
Students
are expected to be prepared with notebooks, textbooks, and completed assignments
every school day. Textbooks must be
returned at term’s end.
SCHOOL RULES
- Carry your program card and student ID at all times. It must be shown upon the request of
any staff member. Your ID card
cannot be altered or given to another student. A lost ID card must be replaced at a cost of $2.00.
- Students are required to carry a pass when not in a
classroom. It must be shown upon
request.
- Smoking, gambling and the use of alcohol or drugs are prohibited
as well as possession of “Mace” or other dangerous chemical
substances. Possession of tobacco
by minors is illegal and will be confiscated.
- Beepers and cellular phones are prohibited in the building. Possession of these items will lead to
confiscation and returned to parents only. Radios, cassettes, walkmans, CD players may be confiscated
and returned on Friday after period 8 in room 140.
- Attendance, punctuality and effort are required if you are to
succeed in school.
a)
Cutting
means missing any class on your program.
b)
Make
special appointments (e.g. doctor) after the school day.
c)
You
may not leave the school building during the day without official permission,
which can be obtained, from the Clinic or Attendance Office.
d)
Lunch
is an assigned period; you must report there on time. Remain in the cafeteria until officially dismissed.
- The elevator is only for students who have obtained an elevator
pass from the Clinic indicating medical problems. A student with a current pass must show
it each time he/she uses the elevator.
- Appropriate dress is expected of everyone. Students may NOT wear hats in
school. Tank tops, halters,
midriff baring tops, short shorts, mini skirts shorter than mid-thigh, and
sunglasses are NOT to be worn in school. Anyone not in compliance with the dress code will be refused
admission, sent home and admitted upon return, if appropriately dressed.
- Graffiti or damaging of school property will require repayment for
damage and may lead to suspension or arrest. Writing on the walls (inside or out) and/or furniture is
prohibited. Destruction of property
and defacement with stickers are likewise forbidden. This activity is a crime and will
result in arrest and suspension.
- Fighting or being involved in a fight will lead to disciplinary
action, e.g. suspension, arrest.
- Pulling fire alarms or setting firecrackers or other incendiary
devices or improper use of fire extinguishers will lead to suspension and
possible police involvement.
- Assisting intruders into the building will result in suspension or
possible arrest.
- Students are expected to follow the directions of their
teacher. Failure to do so
constitutes insubordination.
- Hats or headgear (do-rags, bandannas, stockings, ski masks and
goggles) are NOT to be worn in the building. If worn, they will be confiscated and returned at the end of
the school year.
- Beads, “colors” and all gang identifiers are NOT to be worn in
school. They will be confiscated
and parents will be notified.
- Truancy laws are in effect during the school day. If you leave school early without
official permission, you may be picked up and returned to school by the
police for disciplinary action.
- Students who become ill may NOT go home alone. A parent MUST pick them up and sign the
student out of school.
- Students are to leave the school grounds upon completion of their
school day. If you must return
into the building after dismissal, you will be scanned thoroughly.
CHANCELLOR’S REGULATIONS
- WEAPONS: Students may NOT carry weapons. This includes knives, guns,
switchblades, razor blades, box cutters, lasers, chukka sticks, spiked
belts, bracelets or chains. A
Superintendent’s suspension is an automatic penalty for any student found
in possession of any of these items.
Such a suspension involves a hearing at the Department of
Education’s Hearing Office. City
law states that possession of large knives (and sharp pointed instruments)
is a menace to the public health, safety and welfare of the people of the
City. A person is liable for
arrest for doing so. Finger
jewelry that covers two or more fingers is considered to be a
weapon. Please note that imitation
weapons, i.e. toy guns, cigarette lighters that look like guns, etc., are
also viewed by the police department as potential weapons.
- CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES: Possession, use or sale of drugs or
alcohol will result in administrative and legal action.
- PRINCIPAL’S SUSPENSION: Can mean suspension from regular
classes for a period to be determined by the principal, (3-5 days).
- SUPERINTENDENT’S SUSPENSION: Can mean suspension from school for a
period to be determined by the superintendent’s office. The types of conduct which may result
in such suspension include: possessing or using weapons; using force
against school personnel; inflicting serious injury to another person;
possessing, selling or using illegal drugs or controlled substances, and
engaging in behavior which creates a substantial risk of, or results in
injury.
- IN-HOUSE SUSPENSION: Students who commit
minor infractions will be placed into the In-House suspension room and
must complete daily assignments.
- EGREGIOUS SUSPENSION: Chronic insubordination or repeated insubordination while serving
an In-house suspension may result in an out of school suspension at a
Borough Suspension Center from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
- SAFE HAVEN SCANNING: Scanning will take place on a daily basis. Possession of weapons will lead to an
arrest and suspension.
THIS CODE OF BEHAVIOR WAS DESIGNED TO FOSTER
A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.
Remember, engaging in the following behaviors will result
in disciplinary action: Consequences are listed in parenthesis as follows: (IN)-In House, (PS)-Prin. Susp., (SS)-Supt.

- Hanging out in the halls after the bell
rings. (IN)
- Fighting
and disrupting the orderly operation of school
activities. (IN)
- Engaging
in physical assault and/or sexual assault. (SS)
- Engaging
or causing riotous conditions. (SS)
- Recklessly
endangering students and/or staff. (SS)
- Possessing
or using a dangerous weapon. (SS)
- Engaging
in theft of personal or school property. (SS)
- Ringing
a false alarm or engaging in acts of arson. (SS)
- Using
intimidation, coercion, force or extortion. (SS)
- Vandalism
to school property or that of students and staff. (SS)
- Smoking,
gambling, possessing alcohol or drugs. (PS/SS)
- Selling
or distributing alcohol or controlled substances. (SS)
- Writing
graffiti or defacing school property. (PS/SS)
- Using
profanity in school. (IN/PS/SS)
