The acronym Y.A.B.C. stands for Young Adult Borough Center. This
program is designated for students who are committed to earning a high school
diploma, but have found that four or more years are insufficient to attain that
goal. These students have made progress toward earning credits for a diploma,
but because of special needs, that progress has been hindered.
The New York Urban League has been awarded a grant by the New York City Board of Education to launch a collaborative program to address the needs of the students. The Y.A.B.C. works with students at the Brooklyn Comprehensive Night High School (B.C.N.H.S.), and will engage in close collaboration between the school and the Brooklyn Branch at The New York Urban League.
Our target population comprises those students who currently have 32 or more academic credits toward their high school diploma, but who, for various economic, social, and educational reasons have not been able to make adequate progress towards completion. These students often have special needs including employment schedules, personal family obligations and commitments, childcare issues, and other adult responsibilities that cannot be accommodated within the traditional academic setting.
