Biology and Advanced Placement Biology

The Advanced Placement Biology course includes those topics covered in a challenging course for biology majors. This course differs from a first year course in high school biology in that the range and depth of the materials, the laboratory time and the high level of the material covered requires considerable time and work for the student.

The Advanced Placement Biology course is designed to be taken after the student successfully completes a first course in biology and a year of high school chemistry.

Duration and Credit

This is a one year course with an Advanced Placement Exam given in May.

Upon completion of the course, and with a 3 or more on the A.P. Exam, students will be eligible for a year of Freshman Biology credit in college. The Advanced Placement Biology course is designed to be the equivalent of the introductory biology course taken by biology majors. If the students qualify by a passing grade on the Advanced Placement Examination, some college freshmen are allowed to take upper-level courses instead of the itroductory course. Other students may have fulfilled their science requirement by passing this National Exam and will be able to take other courses in their major field.
