FRESHMAN  YEAR     

September - June

q            Career exploration via www.collegeboard.com. and  www.career explorer.net.; the Occupational Outlook Handbook at http://stats.b/s.gov/oco and the Princeton Review at www.review.com.

q            Begin to visit the College and Career Office (room 115) to research mentorship programs.

q            Begin to get involved in school and community activities and volunteer work.  For more information, go to room 417.

Summer 

q            Continue doing volunteer/community and paid work.

 

SOPHOMORE YEAR    

October  

q            Register for and take the PSAT (Practice SAT/Qualifying Test for National Merit and National Achievement Scholarship Competition).

q            Attend Midwood High School’s College Night/National College Fairs.

Ongoing

q            Continue career exploration and research mentorship programs in the College and Career Office.

q            Continue participation in extracurricular activities.

q            Be sure to apply for a Social Security card/number if you have not done so already.

q            Plan a strong academic program with your Guidance Counselor.               

Summer 

q            Summer institutes, research programs, community/volunteer work, etc.  Explore areas of interest and expand your academic background.

 

JUNIOR  YEAR     

September - January

q            Register for and take the PSAT (Practice SAT/Qualifying Test for National Merit and National Achievement Scholarship Competition). 

q            Attend Midwood High School’s College Night/National College Fairs.

q            Research and get involved in after-school and week-end programs in your school or community.  Look at internships at a corporation or non-profit organization.  Information is available in the College and Career Office.  Note these opportunities have deadlines.

q            Continue college/career exploration and community service and extracurricular activities.

February

q            Spend time becoming familiar with the Resource Center in the College and Career Office.  Look for colleges or professional schools offering your program choice(s) and find out admissions requirements.  Determine your priorities.

q            Plan to take SAT I this year in March, May or June.  Start preparation for SAT’s.

q            Begin to research summer programs and jobs.  Colleges pay close attention to how you spend the summer before senior year so make sure to choose an activity that you will grow from and enjoy.  Note deadline for applying for admission to summer programs, internships and jobs.

March

q            Check bulletin boards outside room 115 for scholarships, summer programs, etc.

q            The deadline to register for the May 6th SAT’s is March 24th .

q            Group orientation sessions begin.  Be sure to attend!

April

q            Make an appointment with one of the College Counselors after your group orientation.  Discuss college options and finances with your family.

q            The deadline to register for the June 3rd SAT’s is April 28th.

q            Take SAT II in strong subjects in which study is being terminated – especially if you are  taking an Advanced Placement course.  Plan ahead.  Many colleges require SAT II’s which are subject-based exams.  Check to see if the colleges you are interested in require them.  We suggest the following:  science -- after the Advanced Placement course so that you are better prepared; math --at the end of pre-calculus or calculus; foreign language -- after the Advanced Placement course; English -- usually the SAT II English Composition is preferred and may be taken at the end of the junior year.

q            Register for the ACT (an optional exam) to be taken at the end of the junior year.

q            Visit college campuses during spring vacation.

May - June

q            Attend Midwood/Murrow College Night at Murrow H.S.

q            Be sure you have submitted your Autobiographical Essay, College Office Teacher Recommendation Form, Profile/Interview Sheet and Course Outline to the College and Career Office.

Summer

q            Participate in a summer program, internship, youth employment or volunteer work. 

q            Visit campuses of prospective college choices.  Call selective colleges early regarding personal interviews.  Write to colleges for catalogs, applications and financial aid information.  Look at college web sites and request applications.

q            Prepare an extracurricular resumé.

q            Begin to work on applications and essays for college which are available in August.

q           If the colleges and programs you will be applying to require a portfolio or an audition, use this summer to prepare.
