Conflict Resolution
This Board of Education Program consists
of the Peer Mediation Program, Peer Negotiation Program, and Council For
Unity.
Peer Mediation
A teacher who is trained in the area
of reducing conflicts supervises the Peer Mediation Program. Students
are trained to meet individually or in a group setting with students who
have difficulty getting along with their fellow classmates. The student
mediators help these opposing students to work out their differences through
discussion rather than violence. Peer
Mediation is a program that is actively involved in teaching conflict resolution
skills to all students who are interested. Six training groups are
run per week, including one that meets after school to accommodate students
with no other time available in their schedule.
Peer Negotiation
A teacher trained in methods of reducing
conflicts supervises the Peer Negotiation Program. Students participating
in the Peer Negotiation Class discuss strategies and skills that are useful
in avoiding conflicts. They learn and practice communication skills
which help to resolve conflicts nonviolently. This class also discusses
related issues such as anger reduction, prejudice awarenesss, and sexual
harassment. Class activities include role-playing and group work.
Students are also trained to demonstrate and teach these conflict resolution
skills to Midwood freshman in their Foreign Language classes.
Council for Unity
Council for Unity is a subject class
that meets daily and focuses on the process of creating harmonious relationships.
Students discuss the nature of differences between people and examine useful
strategies that help people get along with each other. They also
participate in school-wide activities which promote issues related to conflict
resolution.
