This course provides
students with the skills necessary to analyze works of art and articulate
complex ideas. The primary emphasis is on Subject Matter, Form and Content
followed by a review of Principles –Harmony, Variety, Balance, Movement,
Proportion, Dominance, and Economy. Following that, we look at the raw
materials that are organized by the principles – the Elements of Line,
Shape, Value, Texture, and Color. The students are assisted in understanding
how the Elements and Principles work together to form a work of art.
Drawing
This course focuses on an investigation of the visual language in drawing. The students are
introduced to a detailed examination of the basic formal and procedural
means employed in expressive drawing Creating an awareness of a final product
as a result of the organization of visual elements: Line, Form, Value,
Space, Shape, Pattern, and Texture.
Sculpture
This course introduces
ideas and materials that facilitate response to three-dimensional forms.
The primary emphasis is on Subject, Form and Content. The three-dimensional
form is composed of visual elements such as Shape, Value, Space, Texture,
Line, Color and Time. Students will learn the four primary technical methods
for creating three-dimensional forms: Subtraction, Manipulation, Addition,
and Substitution.
Painting
This course is an introduction to the material and subject possibilities of painting. The emphasis is on Construction, Composition, Paint handling, and color. Students begin and sustain the process of self-examination by dealing with diversified subjects. Individual and group criticisms as well as cultural and historical perspectives are brought to their attention.
