Dance Festival 2009 The teachers & children of PS 101 were amazing!
5th Grade Prom
For the first year, 5th graders were able to vote
on their prom theme. Below are thier results:
Dear PS 101 families,
As you know the Mayor announced overall success with the NYS ELA 2009 assessment results. I am very happy to say that as a school, we also made gains and showed strengths in areas we were targeting for improvement.
This year, our 3, 4, and 5th graders “streamed” for Literacy. In other words, we used last year’s ELA scores (2008) plus teacher recommendations to place students in smaller groups with similar abilities. Hence, instead of 1 teacher teaching 32 students of various levels (in each classroom), 4 teachers taught groups of less than 20 students each with similar abilities, in order to give small group focused instruction. In addition, we introduced an Enrichment Academy to service more advanced students, in order to give them targeted instruction; this is where we observed our greatest gain.
While the data is not official, and still loose (we don’t have all test scores yet, but do have the majority), I am proud to share the following highlights:
Approximately 20% of our 3rd and 5th graders scored a level 4 (this is more than double the amount we had last year).
Grade 3: 98% of students scored above the NYC promotional standards and 83% are at grade level or higher.
Grade 4: 97% of students scored above the NYC promotional standards and 80% are at grade level or higher.
Grade 5: 98% of students scored above the NYC promotional standards and 83% are at grade level or higher.
Additionally, I am happy to report that approximately 30% of the students in the 5th grade 21st Century classrooms scored a level 4 on the ELA exam.
Again, let me remind you, all grade 3, 4, and 5 classrooms will be 21st century classrooms next school year, meaning every student in these grades will have their own laptop computer.
We hope to provide you with you child’s individual ELA 2009 scores by the end of next week (approximately May 15th).
I would like to thank and congratulate all the teachers and staff members who work so hard everyday to ensure your children are receiving the best education possible. Education is a group effort of various teachers and staff members who are constantly explaining, sharing, laughing and teaching your children.

Pick-n-Click is here! Pick-n-Click is an interactive trivia game to actively engage our youngsters to develop critical, literal and inferential thinking skills. This morning warm-up session will motivate and challenge students, as well as reinforce skills needed for the ELA and Math State Exams.
At PS 101 it is our mission to prepare children to live and prosper in a
technologically advanced world. In keeping with the Chancellor's regulations
and the standards curriculum we have integrated the areas of math, reading,
writing, science and technology into our daily curriculum. We believe that
each child's unique needs and talents should be nurtured so that they will
develop a passion for learning and acquire the skills needed for societal
membership and meaningful employment. Our parents work with the school to
encourage reading and higher level thinking skills, respect for oneself and
one another, cultural awareness and diversity. The entire school community
works together towards achieving high performance standards. We believe that
every child should be provided with all opportunities available to ensure
that they reach their full potential.
