Even if grandparents can not attend – students will be given the opportunity to share and celebrate them in class on May 2nd.

Volunteer of the Month

As April 23-29 is National Volunteer Week, I would like to have space to thank ALL of the wonderful people who volunteer at PS 102. However, I think this is also a good month to point out that many of our teachers and staff members put in countless hours of unpaid time to organize, attend or volunteer at school events.  I do try to thank them each month in this newsletter, but here I would personally like to thank Mrs. Pat Harner, much-loved teacher of class K-10.  She attends many PTA events from the Skating Party to Sports Nights to Movie Nights (where she pops popcorn for hours!), carries the PS 102 banner at the Ragamuffin Parade, and can be seen at PTA and CEC meetings and most of the birthday parties of her students. Mrs. Harner tackles everything with an admirable amount of creativity, energy and enthusiasm, but also with professionalism and great care.  Before she gets mad at me for singling her out – I would also like to plug an event that is near and dear to her heart.  She is the co-captain (with Ms. Silver) of the Relay for Life Team, a major annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. You can support this effort by contributing through a team member - or show up on June 10th to cheer us on!  Thank you Mrs. Harner – for the many gifts you share with our children and our community.

Text Box: Developing Thinking Skills
Develop thinking skills by teaching decision making
Research shows that children who are constantly told what to do grow up with a problem making decisions for themselves. Making good decisions is key to becoming an independent learner and person. To build your child’s decision-making skills: Increase the number of decisions your child makes. Let her have the final say on things such as what she’s going to wear or whether she listens to music while studying.
•	Limit the choices in your child’s decision making. If you know she’ll choose ice cream for dinner, ask, “Would you like to have a chicken salad sandwich or a grilled cheese?”
•	Guide your child’s thinking when making a decision. Ask her what will happen if she chooses one toy over another. Which one will she use more?
•	Let your child learn from her mistakes. Experiencing the consequences of her decision will help her make a better decision next time.
•	Praise your child when she makes good decisions.

2,3 & 4 I Invited a Dragon to Dinner, illustrated by Chris L. Demarest
Grade 5: A Family of Poems, by Caroline Kennedy

For more info on National Poetry Month see: www.poets.org/npm... and don’t forget to put a poem in your pocket on Friday April 28th!  See: www.nyc.gov/html/poem/home.html

The poem in my pocket will be:

From FIREFLY

by Li Po

I think

if you flew

up to the sky

beside the moon

you would twinkle

like a star!

This poem reminds me of all the random acts of kindness and wonderful work that students, parents, teachers and staff do at PS 102 every day that go unrecognized.  We can’t miss the bad news and often take time to applaud big efforts, but the fireflies – who brighten the world every night – often go about their business quietly and without much notice.  Please take a minute to think of the little wonderful things about your children, your parents, your grandparents, your teachers, or your neighbors that you might be overlooking - and point them out. The eyes of the firefly will certainly twinkle like stars!
