The Physical Education program at P. S. 102 is an important part of our curriculum.  The principal is committed to supporting the program for the benefit of all children.

Our facilities include a spacious gymnasium plus a large outside yard.  We have a large inventory of gym equipment which allows all students to participate in varied activities.

The P. E. program has two full time teachers who are able to provide physical education to the entire school population including Special Education students who are mainstreamed into regular education classes.
The Physical Education Program goals strive to:

  • Provide socialization in a guided setting and experiences that are enjoyable and self-fulfilling
  • Improve individual performance
  • Develop basic skills, such as, coordination, strength, endurance, flexibility, and agility
  • Develop a sense of good sportsmanship

The music program at the Bay View School is intended to reach all students in order to provide a well - rounded musical education.  Music education is an important ingredient in lifelong learning.  Recent research has shown that children who participate in a curriculum rich in musical experiences develop listening skills, increased concentration, an increase in creativity, and an appreciation of other cultures and their music.

Activities in the program are broad - based and include music appreciation, performance, and opportunities for musical creativity.  Students from Kindergarten - Fifth grade visit our music room once a week.  In addition we have a chorus for our fourth and fifth graders and a band for fifth grade students.  A select group of fourth and fifth grade students also create and produce an original opera to be performed in the spring.

At P. S. 102, technology has been a part of our curriculum since 1980.  We have computers in every classroom, each classroom is connected to the Internet and students are instructed in how to use the computer as a tool.  Students use computers for word processing, creating projects and research.  Technology continues to be an integral part of our educational focus.

Each class in grades K - 2 spends one period a week in the computer lab.  Students are taught proper keyboarding skills as well as using the computer to enhance language arts and math skills in both the lab and in their classrooms. Grades 3-5 have lap-top computers on each floor that move between classrooms.

Staff development is an important part of our curriculum and training is ongoing both for teachers and parents in our school community.

Our ultimate goal is to insure "reading literacy" in every child.  P. S. 102 has implemented a variety of special programs aimed at developing and enhancing reading skills; with an emphasis on integrating speaking, listening and writing through literature.  Such programs include: Balanced Reading, Guided Reading, Reading Recovery, Project Arts and E.L.L. Literacy Intervention.  These programs are geared to meet the needs of every child and to provide the opportunity for the children to be actively engaged in their own learning process.  The "Treasures" program is another approach we are using to surpass the new reading standards  Another instructional strategy we are taking advantage of is our Morning Literacy Block, which is 90 minutes of Language Arts followed by a period where the children are asked to discuss and respond to literature in writing.  We know these programs, with the involvement of teachers, parents and community members, will compliment our commitment to seeing that every child becomes a competent reader and writer.

The Bay View School operates a fully equipped television studio.  As part of our school's Project Arts team, students in grades two through five, including special education, have the opportunity to develop the necessary skills in video production.

Students utilize various equipment, including still, digital and video cameras, lights, microphones, switchers, computer character generators, editors and a special effects computer.  The students are exposed to hands - on instructional activities once a week, that integrate the skills and knowledge from different subject areas.  They gain proficiency in reading, writing, listening, speaking, organizational and social skills and career education through the production of video.  Furthermore, students write scripts, design and build sets, act and direct their own productions and critically evaluate their work.

The Social Studies curriculum at P. S. 102 consists of the study of geography, history, sociology, economics, and government.  In addition to the basic curriculum set down for each grade, current events will also be stressed.

In Kindergarten children explore the role of the child in a social world.  First graders learn how each child interacts with his or her family and their neighborhoods.  In the second grade students explore how they are part of a social group called a community.  Third graders investigate different cities around the world.  They will compare and contrast different geographic, social economic, and governmental factors of these cities.  Fourth graders learn about the history of New York State.  Finally, the fifth grade curriculum covers the geography, history, and governments of Canada and Latin America.
SCIENCE

Here at P.S. 102, we are delighted to have children participate in our science program. Young children have a natural curiosity and desire to learn the "how", "why", and "what" of the world around them. Science, with all its mystery and excitement, can be a natural extension of this desire for learning. Children learn by doing and experiencing the world around them. Our methods for teaching science are hands on, inquiry based, and encompass the New York City Scope and Sequence Science Curriculum recommended by the NYC Department of Education.

Some examples of curriculum include the following:

Kindergarten: Exploring Properties, Trees Through the Seasons, What are Animals?

First Grade: Matter and its Properties, Weather and Seasons, Animal Diversity

Second Grade: Forces and Motion, Earth Materials, Plant Diversity

Third Grade: Matter, Energy, Simple Machines, Plant and Animal Characteristics

Fourth Grade: Animals and Plants in their Environment, Electricity and Magnetism
Properties of Water, Interactions of Air, Water and Land

Fifth Grade: The Nature of Science, Interaction Between Matter and Energy, Dynamic Equilibrium: The Human Animal, Dynamic Equilibrium: Other Organisms

Mrs. Cynthia Willie, teacher of science, grades 3-5 and Ms. Melissa Grammatikopoulos, teacher of science, grades K-2, look forward to a scientifically successful year working together to help your children meet the New York City Science Standards.
