VISION SCREENING of grades 2, 3, and 5 and Special Ed. students was completed in November.  Thanks to all the volunteer screeners! If you receive(d) a letter requesting a professional eye exam for your child – please schedule as soon as possible and return the eye form to the school. Poor vision can have a big effect on your child’s performance in school.  Encourage your child to wear their glasses in school!  If you have any questions, please call Ms. Sheri or Nurse Kenney.

Volunteer of the Month

I bit my tongue the other day after telling someone I was meeting with “Anna and her sister”.  Our December volunteer of the month, Linda Rainford, is truly an individual who graciously contributes her time and talents and unlimited energy to supporting our school, especially in her position as PTA Treasurer – a huge job which she has held the last 3 years.  She is an important volunteer and supporter of every PTA and school event, attends  day and evening PTA meeting to read the budget report and puts in many hours behind the scenes at home – doing our bookkeeping, budget reconciliation and planning events… and manages to keep a great sense of humor!  Linda’s daughter, Rebekah, is a 2nd grade student at PS 102.  Her husband, Bob, a science teacher at IS 30, has also been very supportive of her and of the school and helps out when he can – you may have heard him playing the piano on movie nights.  When you meet this lovely, dedicated parent volunteer  please say Thank You Linda!

Just Keep Reading…

Text Box: DECEMBER BOOKS OF THE MONTH
Grades K-2: Animals in Winter, by Henrietta Bancroft
Grade 3-5 : An Angel for Solomon Singer, by Cynthia Ryland
Students are asked to write reviews of books they have read on brightly colored cartoon characters from the popular children’s film Finding Nemo that are brightening up hallways all over the school.  Talk to your kids about what they read and what they write!  The Reading Incentive Program encourages family involvement and increases critical thinking and reading comprehension.  Thanks to Magda Mendez, Raymunda Louie, Priscilla Quintera and our Reading Recovery Teachers, Carmen Peters and Meghan Mullaney, for their hard work on this valuable program.  Thanks also to Theresa Ferraioli for the beautiful NEMO display hanging up in the first floor hallway.

Text Box: Talking & Listening : Practice, model listening skills with your child for school success
Studies show that children spend more than half their time in school listening to the teacher, other students and other media. Clearly, helping your child develop listening skills can help him do better in school.
When you listen with interest, attention and patience, you set an example that shows your child how to develop listening skills. Here are some tips:
•	Pay attention when your child is speaking. Look at him. As you model good listening, you are showing your child how to listen in school.
•	Restate what your child has said. Or have him restate what you have said. This will help your child focus on what the speaker is saying.
•	Don’t interrupt. Don’t allow your child to interrupt, either. It’s rude. And people who are getting ready to interrupt are not listening to what the speaker has to say.
•	Ask your child questions about what he has said. Encourage your child to ask polite questions, too.
