Volunteer of the Month

I was new on the job last year when Caesar “Jesse” Bernacchi showed up the second day of school, introduced himself and asked how he could help. I wasn’t sure what to tell him – so I invited him to attend training for Learning Leaders.  It turns out there was not a lot that Jesse had to learn about working in a school and much he could teach us. Jesse has been a classroom teacher, a middle school guidance counselor and a business owner. He is Dad to three and Grandpa to seven (two of P.S. 102’s own students!)  Since retiring, Jesse has given P.S. 102 most of his Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.  He greets children at the front door in the mornings, does lunch and yard duty, assists the guidance counselor, tutors children and tirelessly worked on vision and hearing screening last year (and will do so again this year.)  Jesse goes about his work here with a big smile and a kind and generous heart.  When you see Jesse in the morning – please give him a big Thank You!                        -MS

DECEMBER QUOTE:

Scoop up a Good Book!

P.S. 102 students are dreaming of summer and ice cream cones while they read a good book!  Students are asked to write reviews of books they have read on tutti-frutti colored ice cream cones that are brightening up hallways all over the school.  Talk to your kids about what they read and what they write!  The Reading Incentive Program encourages family involvement and increases critical thinking and reading comprehension.  Thanks to Magda Mendez, Raymunda Louie, Priscilla Quintera  and our Reading Recovery Teachers, Carmen Peters and Suzanne Stevenson, for their hard work on this valuable program.  Thanks also to Theresa Ferraioli and Annie, Giuliana, Sofia and Sophie of Class 3-326 for the delicious book and ice cream cone display hanging up in the first floor hallway.
