Earned Income Tax Credit

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal and state credit for low-income families. Any family with children and a household income less than $35,000 will qualify for the tax credit.  However, if families don’t know they qualify and don’t file the required EITC form when they submit their taxes, they won’t get the tax benefit. For more information on EITC, you can call 311 or visit the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs website at www.nyc.gov/eitc.

Volunteers of the Month

When I started this job three years ago, I was welcomed on my first day with a fax from Tracey Jindyeh. She was a new Kindergarten parent, offering to provide workshops for the school.  After settling in a few weeks, I did call her and we met and while we have yet to do those workshops – there are a thousand ways this mom has enriched our school community – as TV Turnoff Chairperson, active PTA volunteer and level-headed and strong supporter of school and after-school programs. Tracey works full-time and also helps out with her husband, Ouafa’s successful Camp Olympia which includes summer camp at PS 102 and swimming, soccer, and basketball classes on weekends at John Jay High School.  February and March 2006 will mark the 6th & 7th Sports Nights they have run as volunteers, providing a free, fun way for our families to exercise together. The Jindyehs plan to hold Sports Nights monthly through the end of the school year. I often wonder how they do so much so well and keep their energy and enthusiasm… but since it is February… I would say it must be the love -- love for each other, their sons Ali and Sami and for the PS 102 community.  If you missed last week’s sports night – the next one will be March 10th – I hope you will attend and when you see Ouafa and Tracey – please give them a big THANK YOU for all the talent, time and love they share with PS 102. By the way – Tracey is not my biological sister J   M.S.

Text Box: FEBRUARY BOOK OF THE MONTH:
Don’t Know Much About the Presidents
by Kenneth C. Davis

Text Box: Science: Teach lessons from the heart this Valentine’s Day
This Valentine’s Day, talk to your child about the human heart. Explain that, unlike the hearts we see on valentines, a human heart is shaped like an upside down pear. It’s about the size of his fist, with the other hand cupped around it. As we grow, our heart grows. Here’s how to teach your child how the heart works:
1.	Ask him to squeeze and release a tennis ball for a minute—about 70 times in a row. This is the rate of an adult heart.
2.	Ask how his hand feels. If he has squeezed correctly, it should be quite tired. Tell him our hearts have to work hard to keep our blood flowing.
3.	Help him find his pulse, with his index and middle finger—either on his wrist or at the base of his neck. Let him count the beats for a minute. A young person’s heart beats about 90 to 120 times a minute. Write his heart rate down.
4.	Have him do some physical activity, such as jumping jacks. After a minute, have him stop and take his heart rate again. Compare it to his resting rate. Explain that hearts must pump more often as we become more active.

Interview:

Samantha Hom of class 5-316 was chosen to serve as this year’s Principal for the Day, based on an essay contest she won.  I interviewed Samantha about her experiences.  She found that being principal can be fun, but it is not as easy as it looks. It involves a lot of phone calls, paper work, interruptions and more legwork than she expected. She spent the day with Mrs. Dovi doing “walk throughs”, lunch duty, and yard duty.  Her favorite jobs were making the morning announcements and participating in the monthly safety committee meeting. Samantha also visited all 4t,h and 5th and most 3rd grade classes to read her essay! She noted that being principal is a hard job that commands respect and said that “Mrs. Dovi is the leader of the whole school and must make sure all classes are learning and teach her teachers too!”

THANKS…

…To all the PS 102 Students who worked so hard on their Science Fair Projects – and to Mrs. Willie for putting it all together!

…To over 300 students, families and staff members who came out to the New Year Skating Party and to the PTA for cookies and hot chocolate.

…To Amina Asad, the PTA, Mrs. Pellegrino and all the parents who attended the International Celebration on January 20th … and the Entertainment!  Each and every one of our dancers and musicians were the stars of this wonderful celebration of our many cultures.

… To Ms. Peters for a well-done and very helpful reading workshop for grade K-2 parents.
