Have fun this summer, but please don’t forget that your children should keep their brains working to avoid “summer slide.” You will receive a letter home soon with instructions on accessing Everyday Math games on your computer, and you will also get summer reading lists from your child’s teacher.  I’d also like to suggest:

Thanks Mrs. Jansen for organizing this event!
Stefania Sirota was honored this May at the annual Volunteer Breakfast, as the first recipient of the Christine Alfaro Learning Leader of the Year Award, established in memory of Ms. Alfaro – a wonderful teacher and strong supporter of parent volunteers.  Stefania is the proud mom of Sean, a graduating 5th grader, and Isabella, who is finishing first grade this year.  She is a very energetic, insightful and capable woman who is renovating her new home, pursuing a degree in teaching from Bank Street College and giving three mornings a week as a Learning Leader tutor to a group of PS 102’s fifth grade students.  After starting in September with a student she tutored last year, she wanted to do more and working with teachers, formed a group of 4 ELL students – meeting three times a week to learn English and then prepare for the State Math tests.  Her students have formed a close bond with her and have been made remarkable progress.  As a second project with Learning Leaders, Stefania volunteered as one of three volunteers to pilot a new program the  Mighty Readers Book Club – a group of 12 students who have been meeting once a week over lunch this spring to discuss short multicultural stories. Stefania also ran the PTA Used Book Drive in December, has helped out at events, with Vision Screening and she painted the beautiful welcome banner for the Grandparents’ Day Event on May 2nd.  Stefania is always willing to help and share her time and talents with our students.  If you meet this lovely, generous parent volunteer – please give her a great big

                                                       THANK YOU!

JUNE QUOTE:

“If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”

Text Box: Questions & Answers : Summer Success
Q: My second grader really struggled this year. She’s moving on to third grade, but I’m worried she won’t keep up. What can a parent do to help a struggling student over the summer?
A: Your daughter has had a tough year. She may just want to relax all summer. But you’re right to keep her focused on learning. If you don’t work with her during the summer, she may fall apart completely in third grade.
Your daughter can continue learning and still have fun at the same time. Here’s how:
•	Talk with her teacher about the skills she most needs to practice. Then find ways to make them part of the things you do each day. If she needs to practice measuring and math, make cookies together. If she needs help reading, start a Mom-and-Daughter Book Club that meets over lemonade.
•	Make a schedule, or you may both wind up plopped in front of the TV. Your child should have some time devoted to chores, reading and small adventures to the park or local museums.
•	Let her have some fun. Her confidence needs a boost. Giving her a chance to do things that she can do well—swimming, riding a bike, painting a picture—will give her more confidence when she goes back to school in the fall.

CONGRATULATIONS -

To the Class of 2006!!!!!!!!

I have had a great time getting to know many of you and I look forward to seeing you enjoy all the activities planned this month by your teachers, the G.O., Ms. Famoso and The PTA.  I wish each of you the best of luck in middle school and know you will do well.  I would also like to thank and congratulate all of our 5th grade parents, teachers, Ms. Fasanelle and Mrs. Dovi for preparing our graduates to move on.  A special thanks to our “graduating” 5th grade parent volunteers – I hope you will continue to stay involved as your children grow. You have helped make PS 102 a great school for all of our children in so many ways – large and small – and your support will be greatly missed.
