JUNE QUOTE:

“My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.”  (Jim Valvano, NCAA Coach)

-------------------------------------------------

If you smoke, quitting is the most important thing you can do to improve your health.  The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, in partnership with Pfizer, Inc., is offering Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT, or  “the patch”) to the first 45,000 eligible New York City Residents who call 311.  Please remember – no smoking is allowed in the PS 102 schoolyard or around the perimeter of the school.  Parents or staff members should cross the street or move up the block to smoke. THANKS!

I would need many more pages to detail just how much our June volunteer of the month does for P.S. 102.  Anna Hom has been our PTA president for two years, and previously served as Corresponding Secretary.  I am so pleased that she has agreed to take on this role for a third term and look forward to working with her in the 2005/2006 school year.  Anyone who knows Anna can see she is a “Type A” person – she walks fast, talks fast and multi-tasks with ease.  We are truly lucky to have such a capable & professional parent leader at PS 102.   I am so often amazed by how much Anna can get done – and get done well – in a day and how gracefully she accepts both the challenges and rewards of this demanding position.  Anna is intensely dedicated to the education of all our children. She has brought many innovative ideas to the PTA and is supportive of parents and staff.  In addition to the job of PTA President, she is a Learning Leader and volunteers as a classroom helper in both of her daughters’ classes. (Meghan is in Kindergarten and Samantha in 4th grade.)  On a personal note, I respect Anna greatly as a wonderful mother and a true and caring friend.  Please take a moment and offer a big giant THANK YOU to Anna Hom our amazing PTA President.

PERSONAL ESSAY CONTEST for PARENTS!!!

While the kids are relaxing – I thought you might like to spend some time remembering your own summers past – and sharing a funny or meaningful personal story with us.  The topic can be “What Summer Means to Me.” Your kids will appreciate the story and it will give you a chance to reflect on what makes summer time special and how you can share this with your kids.  Stories should be typewritten or printed NEATLY and 2-5 pages in length.  Please email to: MElliotSheri@nycboe.net or return to school by September 15th.  Winner will receive a really great prize (at my expense-to be announced) and all essays will be posted on the PS 102 web site - so they must be child-appropriate.  I know we have a lot of talent out there – give it a try!

On May 17th, Michelle Kalil of the UFT’s Dial-A-Teacher program presented an informative parent workshop on Writing.  Please see Margaret Sheri if you would like copies of the packet handed out.  Remember is you miss a workshop – you can always ask me for copies of any handouts given (or look on the Parent Information table in the lobby. ) Ms. Kalil also suggested the following web site for great ideas on summer reading: www.bankstreetbooks.com

I’d also like to suggest:

http://www.reading.org/resources/tools/choices.html from the International Reading Association

http://www.ala.org/ala/librariesandyou/recomreading/recomreading.htm

a list of lists from the American Library Association

I wish each of you the best of luck in 6th grade! I would also like to thank and congratulate all of our 5th grade parents, teachers, Ms. Monoki and Mrs. Dovi for a very important job well-done.   A special thanks to our “graduating” 5th grade parent volunteers -  I hope you will continue to stay involved as your children grow.
