Volunteer of the Month

If you are wondering where your box-tops go – Ana Guzman, our March volunteer of the month, can tell you.  Ana has been collecting them and managing the General Mills Box-Tops for Education program for the past 2 years.  It is true that every little bit helps –  the PTA has raised over $2500 from this program.** Ana is also a frequent trip chaperone, attends many workshops and every PTA executive committee meeting. She has also served as a Learning Leader volunteer, translator and interpreter.  Ana volunteered to chair the PTA web-site committee in its infancy and frequently submits links.  She is currently working on the Grandparent’s Day Event and will, no doubt, help out with the 5th Grade Graduation events as her daughter, Desirée, will graduate this year.  If you see this wonderful Mom – please give her a big THANK YOU! for her dedication and service to PS 102. We will miss you Ana!

**You can also add to our box-top refunds by shopping on-line at www.boxtops4education.com. You must first log in and find our school which listed as:

Text Box: Questions & Answers: Positive Attitude
Q: My fourth grader is having a tough time in math this year. Instead of rising to the challenge, he’s about to give up. “It’s no use,” he tells me. “I’ll never learn this.” What can I do to help him develop a more positive attitude?
A: “Attitude,” said Winston Churchill, “is a little thing that makes a big difference.” There’s no question that fourth-grade math is challenging—but your child’s attitude has him behind before he even starts.
Here’s how to help:
·	Take a look at your own attitudes. Think about what you say to your child. The more you criticize him or the more you help him think of himself as helpless, the more you are encouraging him to act in that way.
·	Help your child see himself as successful. Find other areas where he shows determination and effort and celebrate what you see. “I was proud when you got up after you fell on the soccer field. You went right back in the game. That’s determination.”
As your child hears himself described as determined and hard working, he’ll start to behave that way in other areas.
·	Help your child recognize his improvement. If he says, “I’m no good at math,” remind him of how much better he is this year than he was last year.

GREAT LINKS I CAME ACROSS THIS MONTH:

www.kidsnutrition.org - helpful articles and advice on keeping our kids healthy.

www.volunteernyc.org - real opportunities to volunteer in NYC. Also try www.idealist.org for info on family volunteering. April will be National Volunteer Month.

www.elderwidsdomcircle.org - THIS IS A GREAT RESOURCE – check it out – volunteer elders run an on-line advice service. Send in your questions – or elders (over 60) may apply to volunteer.

Time to think about Summer Camps!

We just received the CAMPS 2006 guide to Metro NY Camps for children and youth with disabilities and special needs.  Various magazines and newspapers, available in the school lobby or newsstands, list camps this time of year.  I am holding copies in Room 432 – if you would like to stop by and take a look – just call or email me.
