Volunteer of the Month

Raising five children is a huge undertaking (ask my mom!) and Karen Colombo is sure glad to have her mom, Carla Zarr, along side her every step of the way. Ms. Zarr is proud grandma to Slava, Edward, Vladic, and Vladimir who all attend PS 102 and little Anna who is still in pre-school.  She often attends school functions with the children if Karen is working. She also spends time helping them at home with school work and enjoys reading books with them.  I also found out that Ms. Zarr is a former PTA President from  ____ and graduated PS 102 (when it went up to 8th grade) in 19xx.  Thank you for your past and present service to PS 102 and for your wonderful grandchildren!

PARENT COMPUTER CLASSES:

MS Word classes will be held on Tuesday mornings 9-10:30am on May 9, 16, 23, & 30th, or

Wednesday evenings 6:30-8pm, May 3, 10, 17, & 24th.  Resume Classes will be held in June.  Your PC and parent volunteers are trying to call everyone who registered to confirm their spot.  If you sent in a form and DO NOT receive a call prior to the class, please call (347) 563-4586 to confirm.  All classes have reached the maximum number of students for the space and computers available and we have wait lists.  If you decide you cannot attend, please call so that we many offer your spot to someone else. THANK you for your cooperation.

Text Box: Building Responsibility
Use a garden to teach your child about responsibility
A summer vegetable garden can teach your child many valuable lessons. She’ll see that food comes from the ground and not from the market. She’ll watch as plants grow and develop, just as she is.
She’ll also learn responsibility. As she plants, weeds and waters, she’ll know that her efforts are helping those plants grow.
For most elementary school children, a “yardstick” garden (three feet by three feet) is a good size. Or you can plant a smaller garden in a pot.
Let your child choose the plants for her garden. Let her do the planting herself. Label each with the packet from the seeds.
At first, your child will be happy to weed and water. But as summer wears on, the novelty will wear off. You can help by putting a special “garden” sticker on the calendar on the days she needs to complete these tasks.
When the harvest is in, be sure to prepare it and serve it to the whole family. Your child will be so proud of what she’s grown that she may even eat her veggies!
