Volunteer of the Month

Text Box: P.S. 102 - BOOKS OF THE MONTH
This month we are reading the following in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday:

Grades 3-5: Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! by Dr. Seuss
Ask your kids about the March 2nd Read-Aloud!
Where do wonderful parent volunteers go after their children graduate PS 102?  Well, we are truly thankful that a few of them stayed right here! Tammy Castellanos began as a Learning Leader last year when her daughter, Raquel, was completing her final year at PS 102.  After shepherding two of her three children through the school as an active and vocal parent, Tammy decided it was time to give something back to PS 102.  Upon completing Learning Leaders training sessions, Tammy was assigned to work with Ms. Kutner’s fourth grade class.  Tammy was quickly embraced by both Ms. Kutner and her students who looked forward to her time in the classroom and benefited from her strong love of the English language, her high standards for using it and the care and affection she gave to each kid in the class. This year, Tammy works as many as 14 hours a week dividing her time between Ms. Kutner’s and Ms. Alfaro’s classes.  A woman of unlimited energy – Tammy is also the volunteer assistant coach for the IS 30 Wild Cats Road Runners’ practices and meets.  She tutors, teaches ESL classes at St. Andrew’s R.C. Church, and helps PS 102 with Russian and Spanish translation.  In January, Tammy was blessed with her first granddaughter.  If you are lucky to meet this amazing volunteer - please say congratulations and Thank You!

MARCH QUOTE:

“A principal is a responsible, caring and loving person who makes sure that everything at school is okay.  Mrs. Dovi is a perfect example.”

           -----Yasmin Salem

(Yasmin, class 5-425, was chosen to serve as PS 102’s Principal for a Day on January 21st based on an essay.  She had fun making the morning and lunchroom announcements and learned that the principal’s job is much harder than she thought.)

VISION SCREENING:

Vision screening of grade K and 1 students was completed in January by Dept. of Health employees.  Screenings of grades 2, 3 and 5 was performed by the parent coordinator and the good people listed below and will wrap up early this month.  If your child receives a vision referral form – please take him or her for a professional eye exam within 30 days and send a copy of the doctor’s report to the school nurse.  Please call the parent coordinator if you need information on hospital vision clinics. Thanks to Samia Amino, Jesse Bernacchi, Corrine Farrell, Theresa Ferraioli, Isabel Ibrahim, Adrienne Loud, Kathy McFarland, Jackie Testagrossa and our wonderful school aids Grace Corley and Anna Argiro.
